Any advice here would be welcome.
Assuming you have the 5-speed AW55 transmission (which I think you have) you need JWS3309 - cheapest option is Mannol brand bought on e-bay from German sellers. Many on here have used it and no issues.

Dexron I think is GM's trademark for their own brand.

Smith & Allen is also another brand to consider... Decent fluid and very reasonably priced (Link below).

https://www.smithandallan.com/produc...-aisin-warner/

JWS3309 spec fluid is suitable for 5&6 speed transmissions, so that's what you need if you have the AW55 transmission. Volvo did change to another spec in newer models, but that doesn't apply to your particular car.

Default Aw-1

For anyone requiring AW-1, both Westway and Smith/Allan do a suitable ATF at very sensible prices. British companies too which is nice.

My XC70 uses JWS3309 and my XC60 uses AW-1 even though both have the same gearbox, so I use both.

Smith & Allan Tranguard ATF LV (AW-1) - £78/20ltrs
Westway ATF AW-1 - £90/20ltrs

Mannol recommended MANNOL Dexron VI 8207 as an AW-1 compatible, but I've never used it. Still only £38/10 ltrs from ebay.

Its never been cheaper to look after your gearbox!!

Default Xc70 atf change.

Hia.

Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I’ve read lots of different posts all over the Internet and am left a bit confused.
I think I need a transmission fluid change due to erratic gear changes.

My car is a 2008 xc70 D5 2.4 auto awd 183 hp (with the expensive adjustable suspension) which is great in many ways.

Would people recommend an atf , automatic transmission fluid , complete drain and refill?
A partial drain and refill then repeat?

If you do the complete drain do you need to communicate with the car with the Vida Dice gismo?
If so, why?

This may be a bit of a simplistic outlook but :-
Is the relationship between gears and lubricant not a mechanical one?
And therefore if the bad oil were changed for good oil, surely the mechanical properties of the gearbox would improve greatly?
If that is the case, why the expense and hassle of computer interface?

Put simply, if I dump my old 100k + atf for new stuff without telling the computer, what harm will it do, if any?

Thanks in advance for any help
Jak

The answer to para 3 is yes.

If you've read other threads, plus this one you're as well-equipped as anyone to make the call.

But to answer your latter question, aiui the gearbox has an element of electronic control which has the capability to adjust (for the changing viscosity?) as the fluid ages. However if you don't reset, then after a while it'll learn for itself anyway.

Is that for both the "new fluid reset" and "resetting the adaptions"? cause ideally they both need to be done.....

Is this something I should do to mine? Done one sump dump recently and plan another couple in quick succession. Nothing wrong with the box, just want fresh fluid in it as it’s a new to me car.

Where do I find the reset bit in Vida? May do it after the last dump.

I do it, I cant see it hurting any, resetting adaptions can help if the box is playing up a little.

As for where it is, see image

I was referencing the former specifically, but tbh I'd not hugely sweat either if someone didn't have access to/want to pay for them as the 'box will do its thing - after all it soldiers on with the most appallingly degraded, filthy fluid more often than not.
