Default Audio Visual question

I couldn't find a section specifically for this type of question so I have posted in here instead.

I have an S80 executive with a TV and DVD player in the rear.

I would like to plug in my iphone to see if I can play movies from that to the TV.

I have a few questions:

I have found a Red White Yellow connector (3 wires) which I think is called an RCA Composite AV connection and I presume this is basically the DVD connection to the TV.

1. Can I get a cable that connects from my iPhone to this Red White Yellow connection?

2. If this works then I need a slimline 2 way adapter for this connection so I can connect both the DVD player and iPhone at the same time - is this possible?

3. Assuming I have got this far - if the Red White Yellow cable to my iPhone connects in the slot in the bottom then how can I charge it as the charger connects in here as well?

4. Lastly if this all works then I want to buy a dedicated device for playing videos as I would rather have my phone up front linked to bluetooth for hands free phone calls. Can I buy an iPod or something like that? What is best to go for?

Thanks in advance!

Well I found all the bits I need in Ebay for next to nothing so I am going to give it a shot.

For £2.87 I got three RCA splitters so I can share the RCA connection between the DVD player and the iPhone

I have found a lot of cables that output from the iPhone into RCA format and they all have a USB connection for charging the device at the same time.

So all I need is a USB charger. Again there are loads on ebay but they look like the one in the picture so I will get one and see if I can modify it so rather than going into a cigar lighter outlet I can hard wire it into the car out of sight. The only thing I want showing is the cable that goes into the phone.

A question for anyone knowledgable about electrics - on a car cigar lighter is the outside circumference negative and the central pin positive?

I will take some pics as I go and post the results when I am done.

I've been doing a similar thing. I have a 2009 V70 with rear seat entertainment, sat nav and premium audio.

I have a DVD player in the centre console which outputs to rear screens, they have three input sources; DVD; digital tv; and aux video. I bought an apple cable the same as the one in your photos.

I connected an iPod video (or iPhone 4, or iPad) and they all are to output to rear screens. I also took the output from the headphone socket on the apple device, and plugged it into the audio aux on the car system, so that the kids don't have to have headphones on all the time.

I also got two headphones extra from eBay from a guy in the US.

I'm planning to connect an apple tv, and am looking to remove DVD player in the car and use the connections for that to connect into the car system. That way kids can use iPods as remote controls.

I also have an old iPod video classic in the car all the time to connect for films or music.

Let me know how you get on...

Nic

Hi Costa,

Yes the centre pin (bit you cant touch is +12v) and the outer ring which you can is chassis or 0v, only variable with these sockets is when the +12v power is on, some like on the S60 are only on with the ignition, some other cars are always on which is handy for charging things while your away from the car.

Connecting iPhone to RCA Composite AV Connection:
Yes, you can connect your iPhone to the RCA Composite AV connection using the appropriate cable. You'll need a compatible cable that has a Lightning connector on one end (for your iPhone) and RCA Composite connectors (Red, White, and Yellow) on the other end. These cables are often called "iPhone to RCA" or "Lightning to RCA" cables.

Slimline 2-Way Adapter:
To connect both the DVD player and your iPhone simultaneously, you can use a simple RCA splitter adapter. This adapter takes a single RCA Composite AV input and splits it into two outputs. This way, you can connect both your DVD player and iPhone to the TV using the same RCA input.

Charging While Using the AV Connection:
If the Red White Yellow cable is connected to the bottom of your iPhone, you'll likely be using the Lightning port, which is also used for charging. In this case, you won't be able to charge your iPhone while using the AV connection directly. You might consider investing in a Lightning splitter adapter that allows you to connect both an AV cable and a charging cable simultaneously.

Dedicated Device for Playing Videos:
If you're looking for a dedicated device for playing videos in your car, you can consider options like an iPod Touch, a portable media player, or even a tablet. iPod Touch is a good choice as it's compact, has a dedicated interface for media playback, and can connect to Wi-Fi for content downloads. Alternatively, you could also look into portable media players from brands like Sony, Cowon, or SanDisk.
