What year is your vehicle?

As I have just found out to my dismay, using non-genuine parts does not pay when it comes to replacing suspension , and previously too when I had my V70 and I had cheap aftermarket wishbones fitted.

My XC has rear Nivomat shocks but fortunately they are in good order. The Four C system is a very different and, as I understand, is electronically controlled. Replacing the Nivomats with normal shocks is easy enough, so they say, but I would suggest a different game for the Four C system.

You can replace the shocks with monroe 4c units, the oe manufacturer, at a fraction of the cost,of buying from Volvo. However, even with the saving on shocks, your going to need to budget for new springs, top mounts, bump stops gaitors etc.. to do the job properly. Just changing shocks on saggy old springs will reduce their life expectancy. Budget £450 per corner parts and labour and you won't be a million miles off.

As an example:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302224797950

Just check the part no is correct for your particular vehicle. Vida, if you have it, or a call to Volvo with your VIN number will see you right.

Good luck.

Ps you can replace the suspension with non 4c gear, but you have to trick the computer into thinking it's still fitted. Involves chopping out the sensor at the bottom of your old shocks & attaching them to the new non4c units, iirc. Google it. Folks have done it, not sure how successfully. But it can be done.

You can fit normal shocks to the vehicle but you will have a permenent message "Four-C service required".

When I purchased my S60 I knew that the front shocks were in need of replacement and thought about the idea of removing the system.

The bottom line is you can't and the reason for this is that its linked into other safety systems of the vehicle and Volvo wont allow it to be removed permently. There are other systems that can be removed but this isn't one of them.

In my case I decided to keep the system and replace all of the front suspension and hardware, mounts etc everything.

This is five years on and 40'000 miles and all is well.

Yeah, 4C is an expensive pain to replace. I'm not even convinced it's worth it, it's quite rare mine goes on sport and while I do notice a difference in the handling I'm not convinced it makes that much difference at road speeds.

Having said that, parts are available either from eBay (where that link is very reasonable) or direct from Monroe (now trading as "shocks n more").
They fail like any other part but do it now and you should get ~ 100k out of them.

I know you need yours now but for others with 4C, keep an eye on their site, they quite often do 30% discounts for short periods. I knew mine would need doing at some point so I bought them in a sale several months before they were fitted...
