Default S80 v8 alternator

Good morning all,

My alternator broke in france. I putted the car in a volvo dealer. Cost me 1k to change it... However the air ducting is missing and they quote another 500 euros for the part. Do you now where i can find a second hand air duct and shield plate ? I tried ebah and google but no joy.

I attached some pictures from google

There were plenty sold in the USA. I’d try and source a breaker over there or one of the Volvo parts Facebook groups that has US members.

Air ducting on an alternator. Do you mean heat shield? A scrap yard is our best chance of getting that part cheap.

It not only a heat shiel it also a pipe alowing the alternator to suck fresh air in place of hot air. The alternator is very close to the exhaust manifold.

Do you know any volvo scrap yard ?

I thought about the US but last time i bought some parts from the US and costom charged a lot ! Not far to be 25%...

Regarding importing goods from anywhere outside the EU, you pay VAT on anything worth more than £15, and customs duty of 2.5% for anything costing between £135 and £630. The shipping costs are included in the above amounts.

Thanks
First, that air ducting was on the car when you put it in for repair, it is your property, not the dealers, you want it back and you want them to fit it - reconditioned alternators do NOT come with it so that means the garage that did it have invalidated the warranty by not fitting it.

If they don't have it, it's down to them to fund the replacement - NOT YOU!!!!!

It's a 180A alternator so at 14V and full current output, it will be producing 2520W, that's a lot of heat, hence the air ducting. Failure to fit the ducting on the reconditioned/new alternator will obviously call the warranty into question.

Also if the item is stopped at Customs and they charge Import VAT on it, it is 20% as you rightly point out for anything invoiced as £15 or more but what they don't tell you is that the Royal Mail (or whoever else) charge £8 to collect this before deilivering it!

In other words, a £16 item suddenly becomes £24.20 because of the Import VAT (£0.20) and RMs collection fee (£8) on top of the original price.

However it does seem "luck of the draw" as to whether they check every item. I've bought several things from the USA over the past couple of years, some were over £15, others under and so far i've only been charged Import VAT on one item that was about £18 invoice value. That meant i had to pay RM £8.54, it would have been better for me to pay the £0.54 on the initial purchase and have it pre-cleared at Customs and get the item a week quicker.

The V8 is very rare in UK you won't find one in a scrap yard . Why don't you get one from your volvo dealer ? It is quite complicated , 3 parts , some tubes and about 10 bolts/nuts .

Good evning all,

Thanks for the help. I tried different place but no joy ! I ordered the two parts from a volvo dealer for £232. It is still very very expensive for what it is but still half price than French volvo dealer who quoted 530€ !

Hopefully the car should be back on the road for the end of the month now.

I hope i can have a refund of the alternator event if all was done by the previous owner.

Good evning !
