End of the day, an S80 isn't really classes as a risky car for insurers anyway.
It powers the Noble sports car too in 650 bhp turbo trim .

Done much work on them Clan? Are they a food unit as reported?

S80 and XC90 only weren't they.

yes just those ,
a very rare engine , there were problems with some cars with balance shaft bearings , but they were fixed early on . completely reliable from what i have heard . They really should be putting out well over 400 bhp ( without a turbo ) for what they are though to be that bit special .. they love to rev to 7000 +

I do like the slightly more vocal 5 cylinder character but the large naturally aspirated petrols would certainly have an appeal, 6 or 8 cylinder would be more than acceptable if I was doing the mileage to suit! Preferably manual, but I understand that these were not available in manual... Have you tried any post-MY11 diesel 5 cylinders? They are very smooth, the downside is that they are not as flexible through the rev range as the big petrols

Even bigger downside is that they will be well outside my budget!
(I'm looking to spend around £9k) - If money wasn't a factor, I suspect I would be considering some very different options.

215bhp D5 isn't exactly economical, trust me. For 8k mileage a year, i'd go petrol. Cheaper to buy and cheaper petrol at pump. Also no DPF issues.

You'll get a good one for your budget.

Brings me back to where I began - comparing two petrol powerplants.

How about going V8, or would the tax situation rule it out? With your anticipated mileage you would be keeping it in good shape for it's possible future classic status!

You're on the same track as H20VOLVO, so maybe I should check out personal insurance implications ...

Yay! I priced both the D3 163 and D5 215 for insurance in southern Ireland earlier this year and there was less than €20 in the difference... Power must not be the ultimate deciding factor at least here any more. Hope you get on well!
