Default Radiator Questions

Late type, separate expansion tank. It's starting to lose cooling fins, and also showing signs of coolant leakage which is rather annoying as it isn't that old....

Anyhow, it's my everyday car, so getting the existing unit recored would be a pain, and as I intend to keep the car for a long time (already had it 8 years), I want to sort this properly. New units are available, however these are repro rather than OEM - does anyone have any experience with them, and what the quality is like? In the past I have often found repro parts for cars of this age to be somewhat lacking.....

I have one from Brookhouse fitted to mine. It appears to be fine and is finished to, what I can see, the same standard as before. Only issue I have noticed was that it didn't have a drain plug like the one it replaced.
Also to note I have never seen a radiator disitegrate the same as my old volvo one so not to sure they were that great in the first place.
I think there are some pics of it fitted on my thread.

The one currently in my car was only fitted within about the last 5 or 6 years, but I don't remember if it was a new, or recon unit. Pretty sure it doesn't have a drain tap though - when I last needed to drain coolant, I just loosened the lower rad hose.

I get my rads recored localy with bigger cores for better cooling and also normaly put in a thermal switch for eclectric fan.

Never tried an off the shelf replacment but I know years ago they tended to have very small cores and struggled to cool enough in hot weather,

I agree with Dai. I have had Amazon rads recored before, pretty staright forward as they are soldered and modern cores are wider too.

i had a quote of €200 to recore mine, which is pretty much the same price as the new one from brookehouse.. maybe that's just ireland though. we're not much into fixing anything here. just replace when broken.

Had mine recored at Dundee for approximately £140. Was originally on my previous 120 and was recored about 1985 by the chap who has just done it. He recognised his mark when he worked with the previous company. Small world.
