Default Top Tailgate & Heated Rear Window

I'm in the process of fitting out my new* top tailgate & had a couple of queries:

Should the ally trim strip be fitted to the seal before the window & seal are fitted to the panel, or afterwards?

Also presumably it will need sealant between the rubber seal & glass as well as the seal & body?

For the heated rear window wiring, presumably that needs a relay & some form of timer, but also what amp wiring will it need?

I think I have a solution for running the wiring to the window, but wondered if any one else on here has fitted a heated rear window to an estate, and if so, how all that was dealt with?

*sandblasted, welded and now with fresh paint. Current tailgate is disntegrating rapidly & has big holes in it.....

Where did you buy your heated rear screen from?

Simon at Brookhouse. I bought it in autumn '09 & he had to source it in Sweden. Apparently there weren't many left from the batch that were made, so not sure if they are still available. However if there are any left, I'm sure he'll know where to get one!

I assume the estate window trim is much the same as the saloon. That being the case, the stainless trim is fitted after the window and rubber have been put back in the car. Actually its not as difficult as you may think. I put mine back in and developed a knack in doing it. I can let you know at the time. Its also in my project thread. I only put the sealant between the body and the rubber. I didnt put any between the rubber and the glass and have had no problems, but maybe others will have opinions about that. One thing that is important though, is that the proper sealant is used and put in LOADS of it. It is not enough to squeeze in one run of sealant and hope for the best. Pump it in until it squeezes out all over the bodywork. This can be cleaned up after, its a bit messy, but a lot better than puddles in your car, which you will get if you dont do this. Best of luck with it.
Hugh.

Not sure how the rear screen trim on a saloon fits, but the estate one is very similar to the front screen trim, in that it is two large 'U' shapes, with little finishers to hide the join.

Yeah, its a bit awkward to get around the second bend but is do-able. Put it on after the glass is in.
