Default Smashed rear window.

Smashed the rear window of my V70 yesterday. New glass from autoglass is £700, although glass cover provided by insurance makes this only £75 excess.

This seems a little excessive and wasteful given I can get an entire tailgate from a local breaker for £50. I'm seriously considering this option, I'd rather not claim, even though insurance "won't be affected" by getting it repaired by autoglass.

Other motivation for tailgate replacement is that there are a few scrapes and marks on the tailgate and seems like I can kill two birds with one stone.

Has anyone removed a tailgate before? From what I can see it's 6 bolts and rerouting the wiring and washer pipes. Is it really that simple? Any advice?

Was in the same boat myself a year or two back. In the end I elected to replace the glass which the insurance settled for 450 Euro ! . Even that I though was taking the p*ss as the glass people quoted a lot less until the 'I' word was mentioned.
Scrappy gates are thin on the ground down here and I had no excess to pay neither.

I changed a tailgate on a 240 once but I've never done a v70 but I do know that it's very heavy and will need 2 of you to handle it.

Thanks for the tip savabill. It looks heavy enough but it definitely feels lighter than the tailgate I remember on mum's old 240! New glass for that is probably a damn sight cheaper too!

When I replaced a door I asked the seller to help me remove mine and put the one he was selling in place. These are heavy indeed and need adjusted at the bolts/hinge while installing them. This way you can leave yours at the breaker after removing the lock and other reusable bits.

V70 tailgate is plastic so probably not as weighty as a conventional steel panel.

Yep

It's a white plastic material of some description

A few pics of mine when I had to drill out the captive number plate nuts.
