Getting my gearbox oil flushed and changed at the dealer next month at the first MOT - they've honoured a price they quoted me 3 years ago when I originally got my 64-plate (which was sadly written off whilst in for warranty work).
Tremendous service from Paul Rigby in Brum. J

Exactly - if you bought a car which was long overdue an engine oil changes, you wouldn't think twice.

Transmission fluid (oil) change
Based on my experience with my previous XC70, I can confirm that a transmission fluid change not only resolves clunks, shift flares and "perceptible lack of smooth" gear changes - provided there is no internal damage to the transmission - but probably saves the transmission in the long run.
I now change transmission fluid every +/- 40000 miles. As it can get expensive, I use Toyota T-IV (JWS3309 specification) in the 6-speed TF-80SC transmission - it costs less than half the price of the Volvo-branded transmission fluid and is the same stuff - considering the transmission is made by Aisin (a Toyota owned company) and used in Lexus and Toyota as well as many other brands. Do make sure the required specification for the fluid is JWS3309 before using T-IV. (Later Aisin transmissions used by Volvo -- 6-speed TF-71SC and 8-speed TG-81SD -- require an AW-1 specification transmission fluid). I have also installed an Magnefine filter in the return line from the transmission cooler (which is built into the radiator) ... this should ensure there are no "metal particles" in the fluid to grind up the clutches and bands.

Hi Ed,
They are doing it for £190. Apparently, it should cost £260, but they are honouring my quote when I took out my service plan. I will just have ticked over the 40k miles when it goes in, which I think is reasonable for a gearbox oil change - I had a Skoda vRS with the DSG gearbox and VAG recommend every 40k for those, so I'm going for the same intervals with my XC60. Oil changed
Changed my oil today
109,000 miles had not towed before I got it, was getting harsh down shifts and jumping into drive from neutral Brought 20 litres of JWS 3309 oil 1st drop the oil was black and smelt burnt, not good 2nd drop slightly better 3rd drop starting to see cleaner reddish oil 4th drop much better, a lot more red in colour and smelt like it should so 5th fill would have been almost like new Got oil up to 51c temp then set the level and reset oil counter with Vida Took me 3 hours but hour of that was looking for a 17mm male sump plug remover Job was worth doing Wife works for a motor factors and so got oil for £68 instead of £119 So much for sealed for life..... |

It works better if you run it for a few hundred miles between drops.A bit late for you but ok for anyone else going to do it.

Does anyone know the correct procedure to follow to replace the oil? I have heard you need Vida to check oil temp and reset counter?
