Question how much should a clutch change cost?

i went to my volvo dealer today to get a wheel alignment and wanted to find out how much a clutch would cost to fit as i have noticed a slip or two over past few months. my jaw dropped at £700. is this normal or over the top? (btw thats with reduced labour charge for the car age. car is s40 2001 diesel
any info would be much appreciated.

i generally charge around £100 depending on the car, any garage i would think £200 + vat would be well enough paid, non dealer i'd say around £150, that just labour, price of the clutch i'd expect to be around £100 mark too

£200 + VAT is around £40 an hour as the job takes 5.5 hours , i don't think anyone charges that rate now do they?

my V70 D5 is booked in for a new clutch next week in , slipping after 125k miles , quoted price of £411.25 inc labour but also advised that car has a dual mass flywheel ? and if that needs replacing will add a further £100. Clutch kit from Eurocarparts is quoted at £188 . Looking at the Haynes manual its convinced me not to try to do it myself but I wonder am I being too cautious , looks like a 3 day big headache type of job to me ? Last clutch I changed was on an Morris 1100 in 1976 , it was a doddle , a mechanic could do it in less than an hour , pity that 30 years later on a modern car it now takes five times as long , thats progress .

As i said before, not sure about these s40's, from memory from testing them, the subframe has to come out, not a job for the faint hearted, but realistically if your an anyway companant diyer you should be able to manage yourself, juts get plenty of height and a spare pair of hands

Hi matt,

It does sound expensive when you say it, but it is a fairly big job, and the parts are not cheap either. However this is the going rate, probably less if you consider this is a main dealer price. Here is a price breakdown for you, retail prices are given for parts, which is what you were quoted i would assume.

Price Breakdown (FRF VOLVO) -
Clutch Kit - 30618657 - £195.50
Slave Cylinder - 31259445 - £85.50
Labour - 5.5h @ £59.50ph - £327.25
VAT: £106.44
TOTAL PRICE: £714.69 inc vat

Clutch kit and slave cylinder is all you will need to do this job. Let me know if you want genuine parts, as if you want to buy the parts from here i can supply all the parts for £269.16 inc vat, instead of the retail price of £330.18 inc vat.

Simon
