Question V70 D5 R-Design Oil Level

I've just bought a new V70 D5 R-Design. Despite reading the handbook carefully and asking my local dealer, I still cannot find out how to check the oil level or how to check that the engine has reached normal operating temperature. Any help would be appreciated! Brian Stoole.

Oil Level ,

Shut door turn ignition on , press READ on the left stalk to get rid of any message , then scroll through the fuel trip computer functions , one of which is the oil level ... He oil level gauge goes missing if the engine is running

Dont worry about coolant temp there is no gauge but you get a message if it is too high ( or too low i would think ) It will reach operating temperature after 5 - 10 minutes of driving ..

Also there will be a message if the oil level is too low or high and it will advise how much to top up if necessary

If you get the volvo Garmin navigation device , you can buy an add on from Garmin which plugs in the OBD socket in the car and sends all the engine data you need to the navigation screen .. ..

If it's like my 2010 XC70 D5 there's a small dipstick low down on the front of the engine just to the left of centre. It's really for the servicing technicians when they are changing the oil. It's fiddly to get to and if the engines been running you risk a burn or two. When I first had the car I had difficulty coming to terms with no dipstick or any other engine information and kept checking the dipstick, but not any longer as she's done 32k miles doesn't use any fluids so a weekly under bonnet check suffices except when going on a longer trip when I do my pre take off checks.
Also your car may be like mine where the electronic oil level shows full but a physical check shows 2/3 - 1/2 full on the dipstick. This is a Volvo measure to prevent fuel diluting the oil if DPF regeneration fails, this leads to rising oil level. But Volvos recall tweaked the software to show full on the electronic screen. Mine has a label in the engine bay front showing that the physical oil level on the dipstick when topping up should be below the physical full mark. I don't know if later cars are affected by this or whether Volvo have redesigned the DPF regeneration system.

you must leave the car 15 minutes before using the sump dipstick ( if you can get at it ) before the reading is true . If you change your own oil put exactly 5.7 litres back in and you wont have any problems after .

There is a small dipstick down low on the front of the engine slightly to the left as you look at the engine.
I only know this as I asked why my D5 was saying it needed an oil service after just having had one.

Turns out the oil level was too high after the service. Excess oil was sucked out of the dip stick hole while I watched...all OK now.

My V70 D5 doesnt show a low coolant temp. Is rather frustrating.

What was wrong with a good old fashioned dipstick that was easily reached and took a minute to read?... progress? ...my arse!

I thought the same to begin with, but I've got to like the electronic dipstick on my V70 now. You don't have to worry about finding a level surface as it checks the quantity while driving.

The display will warn you about high or low levels , very handy in the almost unlikely event you get a sudden loss of oil and it will even tell you how much to put in .. who checks dipsticks these days ? hardly anyone at all going by the number if rusted in dipsticks i come across in daily work. I have a rotary wire brush attached to a drill to clean up the dipstick holes .

Hi Clan, many thanks for your very useful posts, long may it continue. Dipsticks no longer being used is interesting, perhaps thats why I have twice had volvos returned to me after service with the oil just off the bottom of the dipstick! The wrong measurement container being used, and dipstick not checked was blamed in both cases.
I have followed your oil advice with interest, and have ordered Castrol Edge A5 B5 from Opieoils at a very competative £95 for 3 x 4litre containers delivered.
They tell me that Castrol do indeed do two versions of Edge, only one of which is A5 B5 , and the 2 diferent oils are in identical containers, so dont forget to ask if its A5 B5 if thats what you need folks. (It says A5 B5 for Volvo on the can.)
Now, how do I turn off the service light? I know I've seen it somewhere here....
