Repair To Old Unit:~ Now Working
Further to replacing the headlamp solenoid: ~
I decided to take a look inside the old unit to try and identify the fault- the fitting can be opened quite easily by bending the six tabs up with a knife ( body is aluminium so straight forward) once separated I noticed a corroded & broken wire as highlighted in the pictures. The wire runs from the coil to a soldered joint ( one each side) initially thought of adding extra wire but on closer viewing you will find more than enough as the same is looped around a very small plastic piece- just uncoil this section. After cleaning up the wire & solenoid body the wire was carefully soldered back. Now for the test! It worked so will be a very usefully spare. The base & body is now fastened together but is sealed with sealant prior to bending the tabs back into place the mechanical switching lever has also been lubricated with copper grease. I did wonder why the wire had corroded and think that the cause was probably spilt coolant when the 240 had the fluids changed last year- balanced bucket spilt antifreeze over the inner wing so had to be rinsed off rather quickly! The relay in all other respects looked brand new so worth changing. Hope it helps with similar problems Regards Bob. |
