Default Replacement Key

Hi. I bought a used 2017 V40 T3 Auto last week. When I purchased it, I was aware that the car only had 1 key (price reflected this). I called my local Volvo dealership and they advised that a replacement key would be £350. Is this the standard rate? Seems rather excessive to me

I don't know what other dealers are charging but if you asked me to guess how much I would have said £300+. These days there's a lot more to a key than the shape of the blade, great for security but you have to pay for it.

10 years ago I lost a key, the replacement cost me £250 but it's not just the key, it's also reprogram the alarm so that the lost key will no longer disarm it and program 2 keys, the original and the replacement to the new settings.

It taught me to be more careful where I put the keys since.

In today's prices £350 would seem about right, you could try other dealers but then you have to factor the cost of time and travel into the equation.

Paul.

Before you buy it will be worth checking that only one key is active on the vehicle. If two are shown then you need to deactivate the one that has been lost or get your dealer to do it for you.

It's not just the cost of the key but the time to activate it. Apparently this can only be done by a Volvo dealer and they will need to log into Volvo's system in Sweden to do it.

Thanks for the advice. Had hoped it would only have been around the £200 mark but it is what it is. It says it has 2 keys registered so should probably make it a priority.

You can do it a bit cheaper if you call Rufe at FRF Swansea and have them supply key only. Discount code is in a sticky.

Then ring around a few dealers (if you are on the road anyway) for the best programming price.

Timpsons do car keys. Maybe a lot cheaper, worth an ask.

I'd be getting the 2nd key disabled pronto even before sorting the new one.

Otherwise one morning you may be waking up to the car having been taken using the 'Missing' Key.

Not quite sure on how the insurance company would view that either.
