Automatic Transmission Fluid for V70 AW5 Gearbox
My handbook specifies Volvo 'article number 1161540-8' automatic transmission fluid for the AW5 gearbox. Is this a special type that's only available from Volvo ?
It must be different to Dexron III as this is what the book specifies for the AW4 gearbox. Gary '99 V70 SE |

i think its a different grade of dexron 3, g i think and f for the 4 speed.
g is synthetic and f is a semi or a mineral compound, i think. its best to buy it from volvo rather than taking the risk at guessing what could be right, its not that much more expensive than say halfords. |

I hope it isnt as expensive as the manual gearbox oil at £15 a litre! Try looking on Volvospeed.com or vptunning.com for more info.

Just got a quote from Nordic for the Volvo ATF.
It works out at about £13 per litre. I was thinking of doing a complete ATF change as my V70 seems to be suffering from a slight 'judder' when pulling away slowly. I read some other posts where this had been cured by a drain and flush. At £13 a litre this is going to work out at over 130 quid !!! GaryB |

At that price they must have used a Dexron oil! If you can get away with using Dexron its only about £10 per 5 litres.
My old Chevy camaro held a gallon in the sump and 2 gallon within the gearbox and torque converter. If your Volvo is similar its not as simple as just changing the oil in the sump. In the states where autos are commom they connect a machine to the oil cooler pipes so as to change all the oil. Unless the oil is discoloured/burnt I probably wouldnt bother with the change. Simon |

This is the fluid you need, don't use Dexron III
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_ATF_3309.asp I don't know if it's available any cheaper than as a Volvo part. |

If that's not related to engine mounts, it could be slippage. >I read some other posts where this had been cured by a >drain and flush. > >At £13 a litre this is going to work out at over 130 quid !!! What's the level at? How's the colour? What sort of time has it been in for, and how many miles? If it is slippage, I'm not convinced that a change will make any difference. |
