Default Fuel Economy 940 TD

At the risk of repeating probably a previous question i am told that on the 940 diesel engine there is the non turbo, turbo and intercooler, Does anyone have a good estimate as to the fuel economy on these. Thanks steve

the only non turbo D24 is in the 240 which wasnt imported to UK , expect 35 mpg from the D24 turbo-diesel , not a lot more economical than a petrol , hardly worth it really for all the weight and noise you have to carry around with it ..

My 940 TD D24Tic estate with manual gearbox (and sick engine with low compression) if driven very carefully could return 32 around town and 40 motorway. I dont think it gets a lot better than this. My 760 saloon D24Tic with auto gearbox and with the diesel pump tuned up returns 24.7 around town and nearing 40, maybe 40 now brake caliper unseized, motorways. I don't think I'd get anywhere near the figures even if my pump had not been tuned up with the automatic gearbox as I did with the manual around town, I would never have the auto combination with this engine again

Much as I'm very fond of these engines I have to agree with Clan really, the mpg is not fantastic and with the frequent oil changes required you're probably not saving any money over petrol but if you're a dieselhead they are quite characterful engines, they have an enthusiastic following. Extremely noisy and prone to head and hgasket problems

Hi StevesVolvo,

My '91 940 D24T estate automatic is getting 30mpg, whether it's driven hard or soft.

As Laney said...'Much as I'm very fond of these engines I have to agree with Clan really, the mpg is not fantastic and with the frequent oil changes required you're probably not saving any money over petrol but if you're a dieselhead they are quite characterful engines, they have an enthusiastic following. It just about sums them up really!

As for benefits, well I've run mine on veg oil for a while which worked well (still getting about 30mpg)......ermmm, can't really come up with anything else. I suppose, for comic effect, the smoke screen mine lays down might count (I'm really clutching at straws!)

CHeers,

Rich

The 740/745 was available in scandinavia with a n/a d24 I had one it was the slowest bastard of a car I´ve ever had.
My experience is as follows...
745 n/a d24 m47 gearbox around 35-40 mpg
945 d24tic hydrohead with m46 gearbox around 30 mpg
944 d24 tic hydrohead m46 gearbox standard around 30 mpg with a little tweaking around 25 mpg but a hole lot of more fun/smoke

3 inch dp + exhaust cathalytic converter binned....
turned in max fuel screw
boost pressure up to 20 psi/ 1,4 bar
boost pin turned to the sweetspot...

If you loosen the 4 screws on the lid to the LDA... You will find a membrane
on the metalplate you will find a punchmark turn the membrane 180 deegres so the punchmark is on the opposite side... that is the sweet spot it will allow more fuel under boost... also check your throttle linkage so you get full travel to the max stop when you floor it...

A lot of tips and trix can be found on www.vwdiesel.net or www.d24t.com
The d24 engine family is basicly a vw 1,6 diesel with 2 extra cylinders so most of the mods the vw guys does is also applicable to our beloved lump...
