Are genuine parts available at a sensible price?

That sounds a sensible course of action.

I know I'm slightly biased but it's quite interesting seeing how many people had 850s and Ph1 S70s and V70s and have some regret at having parted with them. They are getting to be quite rare vehicles and my 1998 turquoise V70 usually generates some interest these days.

I certainly used genuine parts when I did mine about two years ago and they weren't a great deal more than reputable pattern parts. Rufe at FRF has a good reputation for supplying genuine parts at good prices although I've not used him myself. I have heard that some parts may how have been discontinued.

Well, after absolutely ages, the first garage never came back with a price. I rang them again. Nothing. I made a bit point of asking whether they knew the engine "Oh yes, we've done a few of these.." However, there aren't that many about, so that might not be that likely.

After deliberating for quite some time, I decided to go to IVS in Letchworth Garden City. I went there last time - about 7 years ago. I was encouraged by what I saw when I dropped the car off - loads of old Volvos, a couple of which were V70 classics. I said I can hopefully pick it up this Friday (15th)

Will keep you all updated. I'm just glad it got as far as it did without a catastrophic failure. The MoT is due in late July, so I will hopefully be able to fix the other issues by then too. That said, my insurance expires on 19th June, so if it has other 'terminal' issues, at least I can throw the towel in.

If it has blue smoke on the exhaust, When the combustion happens a coolant comes to the engine and a blue smoke comes out of it.

Well, after a month I’ve got him back.
I’ve made a video of before and after.

https://youtu.be/VeCP63Z3ggY

New harmonic balancer, belts, pullies, water pump, top engine mount.
The car is transformed! So much quieter, smoother and torquier.
You were all exactly right - just have a look at the condition of the timing belt. Dodged a bullet there...
Thanks all! It also took very much longer than he charged for.

Nice looking car! Thanks for the update and glad it all turned out well for you. That seems a very fair price for the amount of work involved.

Given the state of that old belt, this story could have had a very different ending.
