Default Groaning when AC is switched on

Both the V70 (D3 MY 2013, 100k miles) and I groan when the AC is switched on. Doesn't do it every time, and it generally only lasts for about 10 seconds after pressing the AC button, although it does occasionally drift in and out at other times. Pretty sure it isn't the blower fan.

I can create a similar (but not quite identical) noise when holding the revs just above idle.

Belts and tensioners etc changed 5k miles ago. AC unit was replaced by the previous owner.

Not too bothered by the noise, but I don't want something failing or ceasing catastrophically.

AC clutch? Alternator on the way out? The groans of an aged troll trapped in the glovebox?

I used to get something similar on my S80 - you could hear it groaning at idle, was somewhat rhythmic, would go away with AC switched off. Re-gas made it go away for a year or so, just kept repeating that on the basis that it was getting slightly low on refrigerant.

Interesting, friend of mine wondered the same. Might give that a go. Did you use a one of the DIY regas kits on it?

I always get it done at my trusted garage on the basis that the machine should detect any issues with high or low pressure and they should be replenishing the oils in the system as well - worth doing right first time in my opinion but from previous experience I'd avoid the likes of Kwik Fit!

I was about to start a thread on the AC on my recently acquired '13 V70. I get a whining noise from the RHS of the car at low speeds, rises and falls with the revs. Quite loud at times, and really annoying. Could it be the compressor? No idea where it is TBH.

Does it stop when you disable the AC?

Yes it only happens when the AC is switched on.

I had a P3 V70 for 5 years and the AC always made that noise. It stopped when the AC was turned off but came back when turned on. Sometimes it was louder than others. I did have it gassed but still I had the noise. I just got used to it. My brother has had the car for a couple of years he still gets the noise.

Well that's a comfort (I think.....!) At least it's sort of normal.. I expect I'll tune it out in time like all other unwanted noises....
