On the subject of chargers, CTEK are often recommended. We have two in the family. Intelligent chargers. Not cheap, but you won't damage the battery by overcharging.

ok if you want to leave it on for months but a normal say 20A charger will be fine , If you leave it on and the charging voltage is the same as an alternator say 14v and you monitor the current you will find it starts out high and as the hours go by falls and falls and after an overnight charge it will be virtually 0 Amps when fully charged so no harm . A battery gasses too much when the voltage goes near 15 v .

It's all good now though once replaced. Alternator was replaced under warranty for the car back in the summer when the bearings started howling.

I've seen a statement on the GSF parts site (not that their batteries are any cheaper!!) that a new battery has to be registered with the control system.
So that would appear to be another reason why it's a main dealer job? I reckon it's a battery and now waiting for the RAC (home start thank goodness), but symptoms are - clonk from under the bonnet (starter motor trying its best?) no cranking, dash lights up like the Starship Enterprise and all sorts of random messages incl park assist service requried - which the car doesn't have ! And no codes ! Battery, has to be. Pleeeease. Nothing big |

Just found this on RAC shop site. " Vehicles fitted with AGM batteries must be re-coded whenever removed or replaced; therefore it is recommended this is done by a professional."

Had mine replaced at Volvo garage yesterday under warranty.
Seems that the radio also needed an update as it was not switching off completely which was causing a drain on the battery.
