A quick update, seems to be ok now, did as you suggested and the gear engages and the input shaft turns in the opposite direction with no noises that i can hear, seems all smooth enough.
While i was underneath i got the clutch and flywheel off and the clutch is nearly down to the rivets, the clutch cover has a date on it of jan 1986 so it has been in there a few years, got a fair scattering of oil in the bellhousing so will do the rear oil seal while it is apart. The flywheel needs some cleaning up any recommendations would a fine wet and dry do it without any adverse effects. PS got a new lid from Amazon cars so no more sloppiness in the gearlever Cheers Tail |

You could get the flywheel ground but a flap wheel on an angle grinder will do a pretty good job. Don't go crazy once your down to the shiny metal!

Just had a go at it, very lightly and there is still a distinct groove where the clutch was sat so i think it might be better to find a local engineering shop and get it refaced.
