XC90 T8 default drive mode
I have a T8 XC90 MY19 and my commute is short enough to do on electric alone.
Is there anyway to get it to default to drive mode 'pure' or 'individual' rather than 'hybrid'. Unless I put it in 'pure' mode each time I start up it will invariably fire up the petrol engine when I get a little too trigger happy. Putting it in 'pure' mode gives me a little more acceleration before the petrol kicks in. Any thoughts? |

Nope apparently not, they set it that way for emissions no way to change it which is annoying as it would be nice to have a different default.
Also I don't really understand the difference between Pure and Hybrid and using the charge and hold options with them and/or with the power mode or AWD mode. I get the off road mode, that's the only one I do get.

Pure - agressive electric only, ice kicks in under provocation Hybrid - as above but less agressive electric. Max 320 bhp Power - ice runs all time to charge batteries. Floor it and then ice and batteries give full 400bhp. Awd - as above but think power is not full 400bhp. Ice runs to charge batteries to run back axle to give 4wd Hold stops you using up any more of your electric, but allows you to use up anything you regen after selecting it. Charge runs the ice to charge the batteries. There is probably some overlap. If you did hybrid and charge would it be the same as power? Guess so, but the power mode does give you a more sporty throttle response.

I set up an individual mode, just have to select it when I start journey, which you do automatically, only annoying part is you roll wheel 2 much, and hit power mode, hence starts the engine.

Hold is actually really efficient, as engine cuts out for long periods of time, when you just off throttle, and you always move off in electric only if you are careful.
AWD not sure it is less power than power mode, but the main difference is it does not hold you in lower gears.

So only Power gives 400 that's good to know or is that the only mode as MaDProFF says AWD mode does too!
The hold & charge in the different modes is what confuses me. Also when you say hold holds battery but allows you to use regeneration if you select it, do you mean if you put it in B mode, it will then use that electric? Hence why I'm confused :-)

If you have a range of 10 miles left on the battery and you put the battery on hold, it will hold the range at 10 miles, but if you are regenerating battery as you will anyhow it goes up, so the car will run on the battery to level it out again.
If you are in hold, and stop when you pull away it will pull away on the battery and then the engine will cut in, assuming you do not stamp on the throttle. If you are driving at say 40 mph or uptown 75 ish, and going down a slight hill so you are pretty well off the throttle, engine will cut out and will not cut back in till you start to accelerate a little harder etc. I drive in B all the time, so when in hold quite often if long enough I do actually end up with more battery miles than before I went into hold. As a Rule in my opinion you should only really use battery charge mode when going down hill, or on flat at around 40-60 mph after that you use more fuel

When you say battery charge mode, you mean Charge from the screen or B mode on the gear selector?
Also if you press Hold in AWD or Power mode, what happens? You still get electric power but less? Or the same still and it holds the power in the battery but generates extra to run AWD and Power? Thanks

I'm following this with some interest, as when to use the Hold function is something I need to learn.
As an example, I did the same trip on consecutive days in similar traffic conditions. Day 1 - Hybrid mode only. Figures are miles - fuel - mpg - Elec Consumption - Elec recharge. Journey out, 26.9m - 0.1g - 140.6mpg - 8.4kWh - 0.8 kWh Journey back, 27.4m - 0.8g - 33.2mpg - 1.7kWh - 2.1kWh Day 2 - Hybrid mode, batt hold on motorway section Journey out - 26.7m - 0.4g - 65.8mpg - 6.3kWh - 2.1kWh Journey back - 27.4m - 0.5g - 46.3mpg - 4.5kWh - 2.0kWh I'd have expected the average mpg to be similar for both days but running the battery down appears better than spreading it across the journey to me. |
