Neither Louise, try Carlube ATF-U and you can use it in the gearbox (auto) as well.

I've tried both Dexron (no "T" in it! ) II-D and Carlube ATF-U in both gearboxes and steering and it's far superior in both. Dexron III is thinner (usually) than both of the above and probably not the best choice for an older design of steering or auto box.

Also i'd suggest getting one of these :

Use it to suck the fluid out of the PAS reservoir, discharge it into something like an old Pot Noodle pot then top up with fresh fluid. Start the car and slowly turn the steering from lock to lock several times, switch off and recheck the level in the reservoir, topping up as necessary.

If the fluid that comes out is dirty, repeat this at weekly intervals until the fluid remains clean which usually takes about 3-4 weeks. It should also help revive the oil seals within the PAS, especially if you use Carlube ATF-U and you should find the steering is quieter and lighter, especially after a few of the empty/refill cycles.

Thanks Dave, going to try both your suggestions as I doubt my steering fluid has ever been changed. Spent a fortune on the old girl last week (timing belt, 3 oil seals, tensioner, water pump, aux belts, rad hoses and heat exchanger hoses so this is a relatively cheap fix!

Cheers,
LeeP
