Default V50 D5 Timing Belt - Any Guides ?

Hi All,

I am looking to get my cambelt done on my v50. The mileage is 164k.

I have been searching the forums, and it seems to be recommended to get the AUX tensioner changed at the same time. I am surprised to see people do not recommend changing the water pump though?

These are the parts i have found
https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/ina/2386328

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/gates/785502

Anyone got rough price i should be paying on labour? I do quite a few jobs on cars, but dont fancy doing cambelts!! Previously i have stripped everything down and had a mobile mechanic just swap the belt.

Is it a big job on these? anyone know of any instructions? I wouldnt mind estimate on labour costs...

Thanks,

About £475 at Volvo they will do aux tensioner cambelt and water pump,my tensioner was making noises at 110k once replaced car sounded like new.if u take it to and indie they will only probably replace cam belt it's worth spending the extra couple of quid in my opinion as the cam belt or aux could kill the engine

Probably the easiest timing belt change I've ever done.

Take off the OS wheel, loosen off the engine mount on the OS and place a jack below to raise the corner of the engine up, remove the engine mount and remove the AUx belts.

I replaced the following:

Timing belt
Water pump
Tensioner for both AuX belts and Timing belt
Aux belts

Basically all parts on that side.

My local motor factors supplied the kits, but they came approved by my local Volvo garage, apparently supply the same make of parts.

Member 'cheshired5' here is very knowledgeable and has some rather excellent video guides on YouTube as poster SiRobb - I hope I've got that right if not he'll be along shortly to give me a bollocking

Thanks i think I will do the water pump as well and have a search on Youtube.

I wouldn't be worried about replacing AUX and tensioner myself. I probably be ok with a cambelt the are just scary lol.

Hoping to keep costs down not had car long. I love the sound of it though!! just done the spring, and 2 inner cv boots and a full service.

Well if you can do them, I'm sure you won't have trouble with the timing belt.
Just make sure you lock the cams off, I put marks next to the cogs to make sure timing is kept exact.

Leave the water pump alone or change for a genuine Volvo one if it's the car's 3rd timing belt.
There are 2 aux belt tensioners and it's best to get them changed out as it's not stated as a requirement, but the bearings on the pulley end up chirping and the deflection in the tensioners can get quite bad.
Of course the D5 is known for the timing belt sucking in snapped aux belts and we know what that means...

Could I have some advice please? I am doing the same job on my 2010 XC70. I've released the water pump but can't get it out because of the very limited space. Should I remove the inner timing belt cover? Or maybe raise the engine a little? I don't really want to remove the inner cover as I'd have to take off the cam pulley. Worried about losing the timing.

I'd really appreciate your guidance on this. Thanks.
