NGK are good plugs but ebay is full of fakes, make sure you buy from a UK factor.

Whilst Bosch have more than the fair share of defective plugs ones that work are still decent. The only plugs that will almost never work are Champion
every single word true in my 47 years experience !

I used to work at a motor factors, reps would try and get us to swap to other makes, but never got anywhere. I dont recall a single faulty NGK.
I never had much luck with NGK in my well tuned turbo non-volvo engine, uneven running , short life before un-drivable ,Genuine Volvo B21E engine plugs all the time never a problem they covered all driving conditions , and have done for many of my friends in similar conditions over the last 46 years in all sorts of engines using a similar plug . ....

Probably because most Champion plugs misfire very soon into their life Ian. Nothing inherently wrong with Bosch but for my money i'd go for NGKs every time.

As for the 4-electrode Bosch type, no real gains to be had on a red-block other than extended change periods, i believe (without double-checking) they're good for something like 100k miles but might be thinking of a slightly different plug (NGK Iridium) as i'm not fully awake yet.

Either way buying the 4-electrode jobbies probably isn't worth the extra expense. Good though it is, the red block doesn't have the features that will make the most of the more expensive design.

If they worked well before why not stick with them ?
A mate of mine has brought 4 pallets of goods various and there are some Bosch plugs in there which are going at a nice price to me, as ive never used them I just wanted some feed back on them, After what the feed back has said im sticking with NGK,

Interesting as I thought if they fitted FT they would fit FK ?

You have found plugs that work for you. You do not have overwhelming recommendations to change. So continuing with the plugs you have been using makes great sense. Cushti.

I suspect that for most of us, any reputable brand wll be good. Hush my mouth but some people chase for the perfect and overlook the really very good that might even be better. But then again I could be wrong.

As it happens I use the spark plugs sold by Volvo dealer.s No surprise there! I only buy non-Volvo if there is a clear reason to do that. If we do not buy from the dealers, that source of spares will no longer be available to us .... simples.

Volvo specify subtle differences, however NGK list the FT and FK as needing the same plug, B(C)PR6E or 6464 which is their "short" part number. The "C" in brackets denotes copper core and is optional, i prefer it as they seem to perform better for me.

Link to the NGK Pratfinder Catalogue showing the page for the 940 2.3 and the various options.

I have never understood how people can say that the appropriate Bosch/Volvo oem plugs are made to a higher standard than say NGK plugs, or others.

I have never seen any irrefutable evidence of this, nor can I imagine a manufacturer stopping a production line to insert some different quality materials!!

Over the years I have used both Bosch and NGK plugs on my 244 and 745 and haven't noticed any difference in longevity or performance.

Volvo have always demanded higher quality parts right from the 1970's , onwards there are different grades of Bosch , depending on what their customers demand .

Bob. I suspect that in the world as it is now, you are right about a lot of parts. Relative commercial bargaining powers have changed.

In the olde days a car maker such as Volvo might well have been able to persuade some component manufacturers to supply some upgraded products. Volvo had the volume and could pay a higher price by selling at a higher price.

Nowadays as we know, some Volvo spare parts are not as good as they used to be. Possibly for example water pumps, exhaust pipes....

*****

Thank you Clan. I do still suspect that Volvo's standards for spare parts are slipping....
