gear lever bushes
I have play in my gear stick so bought bushes from Brookhouse
Just wanting to double check that I'm going to be doing it right From the diagram do I undo the set screw ? Is it an allen key that it undoes with? I take it it's then just a case of pushing the pin out and fitting the new bushes in ? Cheers, Mark bushes.PNG

From memory you are correct. It’s just an Allen headed grubscrew, might be better off putting a low strength thread lock on the grubscrew to make sure it doesn’t come loose.
Any chance you can stick some pictures up of the bushes you bought?

Can i make a suggestion Mark?
Before you crawl underneath to do the job, order the bushes marked "18" in the diagram and any wearing parts that go with them too. It's a long time since i've deliberately owned a manual and even longer since i've owned one that had a floppy gearstick (ooo-errr missus, nowt worse than a floppy stick! ) but on the last one i had that needed similar, i ordered the bushes similar to the ones you've bought and the extra bushes for the end where the stick goes into the end of the selector rod. I was glad i did - the nylon bushes on the ball of the stick were ok (not great, but passable), the ones causing the floppy were the ones on the end where the stick met the selector rod. That one was a gearbox out job to replace them although i could have done the ones similar to what you've got without dropping the box. It had to come out anyway as the layshaft bearings were shot and the rest weren't great either. WHichever way you view it, they're not likely to be expensive and might save you a lot of frustration when you realise you need them as well.

Very easy
By chance I just changed these bushings last week. It didn't bother me, but my son just got his drivers licence and he was complaining about the gear stick play. It is even simplier done than explained on paper.
You need an Allen key to undo the grubscrew (which fits in the recessed part of shaft 14). Shaft 14 is very easily pushed out. The selector rod falls down a little bit and you can replace the bushings. It will take you no more than five minutes and it takes out the sideway play of the gear stick. Just to show how durable our Volvo's are: my son was only two weeks old when I put him and his maxicosi in the rear seat of my 940 I just got. 18 years and 280K miles later he is now at the steering wheel of this same 940... |

Poss my picture makes them look bigger Dave but they are way to small to fit up there. I would reckon they are about 8 to 10 mm inner diameter
Cheers, Mark
