After reading several 'how to' guides just removed by glove box and sat nav to replce the pollen filter but it wasn't there, is it on the drivers side?

Thanks.
start the engine put ac on max cooling go and look at the cooling fan it is not very noisy on low speed you should feel the draught though or see the blades turning from behind . If the AC is cycling the pump evey 5 seconds the gas will be low and the most likely cause is a corroded condesnsor mounted between the radiator and intercooler .

Fan doesn't turn with the ac on. Are there any checks that would narrow down the actual cause or anything that usually fails?
THanks

The fan is quite simple , two very thick wires in a multi plug on the fan housing one is live and the other earth so put a test light across these after unplugging it ( with ignition on ) assuming you have power and earth there it must be the fan controller . There is a third very thin wire in the plug , it comes from the engine control unit which sends digital signals to the fan controller to tell it how fast to run .

Sounds like you need new GPS aerial: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=230193

Update on this.
Managed to change the cabin filter, it was as Clan suggested totally blocked. I have air in the car now.
I put a meter on the supply to the radiator fan. 14v and 3v on the. O from wire so it does look like the co trolled is faulty.
Nit looked at the sat nav yet. It will check the aerial as has been suggested.
Thanks all..
