Tap Tap :-/

Hi again, I have a small problem with my clutch, I think. With the passanger window open you can hear a tapping sound when the clutch pedal is being engaged (tap) and then again when it's released (tap).

This well happen if the car is sat idling and you press the clutch or if your driving.

Any ideas???

Do you have any other issues with the clutch?

A possibility is the throw out bearing? which i gather is a cheap part bur expensive labour wise.

Mine has a squeak when coming on and off load also has a squeal sometimes.
I have diagnosed it as the dual mass flywheel.
Your issue could be the same and it is the springs in the flywheel tapping due to movement.
My friend who works for the police in their garages reckon it's nothing to worry about as they have had volvo cars from new with squeaks and clunks from the transmission with no adverse problems. Some cars have had complete transmission and clutch replacement only for the problem to come back.
I have put over 4,000 miles on mine and it hasn't blown up yet!
Do not look on the internet (and I really mean this) for Volvo V70 dual mass flywheel failure, as this will just cause further heartache.

It is a bit of a mystery also which cars came fitted with dual mass flywheels and which didn't!

I would turn the stereo up!

I'm sure everyone at some point has turned the stereo up and ignored noises for a short time, although I doubt anyone tells the buyer when the car is sold...."did you look after the car well mate" ..."yeah course, as soon as i heard a dodgy noise, i turned the volume up, superb speakers"!!

p.s heyskull....(just jesting).

However personally I wouldn't ignore a constant noise coming from the clutch when the pedal is depressed (or released), as while its one of the most expensive aspects to fix, its not something you want to fail.

If the OP is looking to keep the car then yes I would have the bearings looked at, but i guess if he isn't interested then he may well ignore the noise and hope it doesn't get worse.

It's a 1997 V70 2.5T (193hp), don't know if this one has a DMF !?

It's just that thing of when you hear a noise you want to find it and fix it, well it is with me, lol. The tapping sound isn't that loud, just I know it's there and I don't want it to lead to something that's going to cost me an arm and a leg.
