Rather than diving in and dismantling my existing turbo, i bought a second hand unit off eBay that was reportedly blowing a bit of smoke. Not specifically to replace mine, but rather just to get a feel for what i was doing before going 'live' so to speak.

Upon stripping it down, the actuator arm was moving smoothly, although required quite a lot of force. Is this normal or should it be easy to move manually?

I also lost the circlip that holds the actuator arm onto the control lever. Can anyone confirm what size circlip i need to replace this?

The vane controlling lever on the turbo itself wasn't moving so smoothly, feeling a bit jerky and rough.

After the cleanup, the vanes are moving much more smoothly and i'm considering fitting this unit on to my car anyway to confirm the fault with the turbo unit itself and to see if it makes any difference to the way my car drives. This is largely dependant upon how difficult i find it to remove the turbo unit in the first place..

Hi Guys, what a great thread, and very timely for me as with some others it seems.
I am getting Engine Service messages and had 6805 fault code read as well.
Just a quick question, would my 2006 XC70D5 (163ps) have the same turbo unit that is being written about in this thread.

I have been told that my turbo can not be stripped to check if the VNT is broken or just carboned up. They tell me that once the turbo has been opened that it will need a new one costing between 1750 & 2000 pounds fitted.

I would much rather have a few skinned knuckles than a severely skinned wallet.

Thanks in advance.

I think its the same turbo but not 100% certain , check to see if its got a vacuum actuator or a servo controller . I think both types can be dismantled to clean the VNT but I am told that the calibration on the servo type could be affected , Garrett produce a few scaremongering product information bulletins to help maintain their closed shop distribution network and discourage amateurs like me , I am also told the same about the vacuum actuator type but have not experienced problems with these . The main risk with the vacuum actuator turbo is putting it out of balance by moving the relative position of the impellor to the main rotor shaft but this does not need to be disturbed unless you are also taking the core apart to replace bearings and seals.

Hi Bernard, thanks for the quick reply. What do I look for to tell which type turbo I have?

Post a few close up photos of your turbo so we can have a look , its easy to see the difference . The newer servo actuator I think may have only been started to be fitted on the Euro 4 185bhp D5s from about 2008/2009 onwards , I bought one by mistake thinking it would fit my 2003 D5 but its no use , however the aluminium casting/core looks to be the same to me and I might try swopping the bits over if I get desperate . The ones shown on this thread use the older design with separate exhaust and turbo castings and the newer ones use a one piece casting .

Hey thedriver,
Bernard is right about the scaremongering information, my dealer told me that removing the turbo would definitly ended up with a wrecked engine. My odometer has been showing 11.000 miles since removal cleaning and adjusting and the car pulls as strong as out of the assembly line... I have to admit that althought adjusting is not recommended at all, I messed up the factory adjustment as trials when ecm6805 showed up, so I finally try a reajustment of the arm and everything works fine.

ps: I saw a dark red V70 (same as mine) from england (cumbria aera) in Quiberon, Brittany, this summer, I just talk to his around 8 years old son but unfortunatly not to the owner, anyone from the forum ? As far as i can remember the licence plate end up by V70 and it was a 2001-2004 model (Licence plate shows no year)

Hi Guys, thanks for the positive replies. Here is a pic of my turbo, it is a little hard to show much.
One more question, on a XC70 AWD do you still get the turbo out from below, as the rear driveshaft looks to block the way a little. Or will it come out the top?

Thanks, Mark.

I would love to do a "work shop" type thing where 4-5 owners all meet up with tools etc , Rent either ramp space (Easy in London) remove turbos and clean them all out and re fit . Having done it before on a Golf , the difference was amazing !

Hello all, i have no ECM6805 codes or limp mode, had it once but it was related to the front engine mount.
As time was passing by i noticed a light loss in power, oil consumption, greyish smoke on acceleration and white smoke 10 secs after a cold start continuing for a couple of minutes while the engine runs hot, these days on 0 degrees C a lighter instance of the white smoke continues also while the engine is hot.
The car is a 2005 163HP D5 S60 and has cca 150k miles lubed by 5W30, preforming the cleaning of the turbo would some of these issues? Anybody has an idea what these issues could been related to?
