Default 850 rumbles in the rear

I have a 1995 850 estate which I have owned for five years. In recent months it has developed a very annoying rumble generated through the rear suspension i.e the rumble is heard when going over bumps. It sounds like metal on wood but the top shocker mounts were replaced last year and I have checked them again and they are OK. However, the shock absorbers are the originals and the car has done 116K, could they be the cause? On looking through messages on the forum mention has been made of the hand brake shoes rattling in the drums and a loose exhaust causing rattling. The car was serviced a few weeks ago and nothing was found to be loose or rattling underneath. I have stripped out the rear child seats and tightned everything in sight but still the rumble comes. My children reckon the sound is definitely generated from behind the rear seats (not the child seats). What could be the cause? Has anyone any ideas on this please? It is driving me mad!!

check the catch's for the rear seats, the ones you have to release to fold them down. mine were lose and i out some tape around the catch to make it thicker, this stopped the rattle.

hope that made sense!!
