Default Noise from high pressure pump?

Hi,

At idle I've got a squeeky sort of rattle that seems to come from the right side of the engine, around the high pressure pump. Just a tickle of throttle and it goes away but comes back at idle.

I've changed the diesel filter and there's no change. The car starts and drives fine.

If the pump is bad enough to sound bad wouldn't it affect the starting?

Should I keep driving it or will that cause more damage?

Any advice would be great

Unheard of for it to be the pump - most likely tappets opening up with the lower oil pressure.

Tip: try removing the oil filler cap whilst the engine is running, if the same rattle gets louder then its tappets.

EDIT: The above assumes you have a 5 cylinder (Volvo) engine - if you have the 4 cylinder 1.6 or 2.0D then that tip won't apply as the oil filler is into the crankcase.

Thanks, and yes it's a 2012 D5

Taking the oil cap off doesn't change the squeaky noise. Worryingly the noise is now just before idle and goes away at idle. The DMF is in this area isn't it?

I did manage to get a video, I'll try and upload it

That works - but it's a new one on me, not sure what that is. Yes the DMF is at that end of the engine but that doesn't sound DMF like to me.

There is a small vacuum valve on the brake booster that is leaking. Replacement is straight forward although you will need to remove the battery tray for access.

Part costs about £70.00 from Volvo.

Hello, I've listened to your video and to me that noise is coming from the airbox.

Lift the airbox lid of to see if it changes.

If it is, tired hydraulic lifters are a common theme.

This forum user had similar https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=223589&page=2

If you read through it and note the update on post #11 it appears the noise in the airbox was solved by replacing the hydraulic tappets.

Good look with your quest and don't forget to update with the cure. Might help someone else in the future.
