Wanted: Petrol XC70
Hi all,
My trusty Saab 9-5 aero estate has decided that 220,000 miles is about its economic limit so I’m unexpectedly car shopping. Unplanned purchase so the budget is tight - £2500 tops ideally - what have you? Thanks, Gaz |

My 9-5 Aero (stage 3+) got to 190k before I switched to my XC70. Must say, I do miss the Saab.

It’s frustrating really as it’s an accumulation of relatively minor issues, rather than one really expensive thing.
In your experience how does xc70 ownership compare with Saab? Am I going to miss the extra 50bhp or does the overall experience make up for it? Gaz |

Good question. My 9-5 was an auto , Noob ECU, 3” Hirsch downpipe, exhaust and inter cooler off a Troll-r and a 3.5 bar fpr. It was very entertaining. My XC70 is an E3 163bhp geartronic version. It’s got nowhere near the same sense of urgency the Saab had. But the torque isn’t too far behind the Saab.
I have and am enjoying the Volvo. It’s better built I think than the Saab. I bought mine by accident and it’s actually turned out very well. I’ve done c. 40k miles in about 30 months. It’s averaged 37mpg which is probably only 4mpg better than I averaged in the Saab. But Shell V-Max is more expensive than regular diesel. I do miss the vented seats in the Saab. They were superb. The later 9-5’s were not as well put together as the earlier car. I had a 2009 DE diesel (Hirsch chipped to 175bhp and c 350Nm) which was OK but not great. I swapped it for the Aero (2003) when the gearbox went bang. The earlier car had a nicer feel to it. Last edited by eternal optimist; Jun 16th, 2020 at 07:40. |

why do you specifically want an XC?
slower, more to repair, uglier.

Do you mean in comparison to the v70 or the Saab? Aesthetically speaking, none of them are winning any beauty contests, but I just prefer the front and rear end treatment of XC to the V. 4wd and a bit more ground clearance would be occasionally useful and I’ve been impressed with some of the attention to detail / ergonomics of my other half’s C70. I’m not really a fan of SUVs but if an XC90 is an all round better ownership proposition I’d consider one of those maybe... I take it you’re not a fan? Gaz |

no I like them but they command more money due to generally being specced better from new and the rarity. About 10 to 1 sometimes v70 to xc70
