I have just been into town this afternoon and was struck by the number of drivers wearing masks whilst driving alone. What is that all about? Are masks now the latest 'must have' fashion accessory?

They certainly aren't in Wigan! my wife had to shop at Asda today and just two people wearing masks - she made the threesome.

There is some mileage to that but the talismanic trust in a mask of limited function could counter it. That belief then gets expanded to non mask wearers are spreading the virus, in the same way that the 'stay at home' message got expanded to the point where people who didn't stay at home were spreading the virus and wrecking the NHS, and became social pariahs even if the reason they left home was to support society.

There definitely is mileage in everyone wearing masks. As Dave says, masks aren't the full answer and they won't completely stop all virus spread, but they do create a barrier to the spread and their widespread use would certainly lower the population 'Ro' value by quite a few points. As Austin says, something is better than nothing at all and any simple measure that can inhibit the spread is worthwhile. With the epidemiological evidence available from around the World the use of masks in busy and/or confined spaces seems to be a no-brainer and I can't understand why our government didn't instruct their use sooner.

Some people can't wear masks for medical reasons so we shouldn't judge anyone for not wearing them. As for wearing them when alone in the car, I've no idea . . . . !

Stan.

I've noticed some drivers wearing masks when alone and it seems weird, but then realised some are actually minicab drivers who have to wear them, uber also has some tight restrictions on their drivers.

only for the brain deads

PPE has limitations, said limitations depend on CORRECT use of them
99.9999% of the sheeple have not got Clue 1 when it comes to proper use of PPE

EG #1
man walks out of shop, wearing gloves And a blue, disposable face mask
Loads shopping bags into car, tugs mask down off face With gloves on,takes a ciggy out of the pack lights it, reaches into car, applies hand sanitiser to gloved hands, then holds ciggy in gloved hand and stands there having a smoke
EG#2
store assistant,
Elbow length clear vynal type gloves, Face shield + face mask
Face sheild is canted UP at an angle, closer to 45deg from face, face mask is UNDER her chin,,she is Also fussing with the face mask every few seconds with gloved hands,, screaming at people "2 meters",,

a Disposable face mask is just that, NOT something to get folded up and put in bag/pocket to reuse next time,
disposable Gloves to protect from contact transmissions, are just that, and whatever you Touch with them on Needs to be sanitised before you touch with bare skin ,, OR you have negated the Whole point wearing them
Ditto masks, fiddling and fussing with them With gloves on - both contaminated,

the BS about a "face covering" being needed for public transport to "keep you safe" is just that, BS, its a SOP to ease the worries of the sheep, due to the Hysteria and panic caused by the media
sooner the sheep wake up,, the better,, NOT a fogging hope in hell of that when the Morons are having a go at anyone NOT wearing a mask/gloves/not stopping indoors for 4+ months,

You ALL could have done with having nbc training back in the day, getting a CLUE about PPE , its limitations AND the correct use of, then Maybe you'd realise what a crock it is when "joe soap public" gets /misuses And then has the utter stupidity to berate those who Choose not to fall for the BS

"once we are on the other side of this".

I don't think we'll ever be on the other side of this. At least for another generation.....

PPE is being treated in many cases like the magic pill that will protect you if you have it & no thought is being given as to how to use it properly.

The number of people I've seen in shops wearing a mask & then pulling it down when they need to speak to somebody, people wearing gloves but then fiddling with their mask as it's uncomfortable whilst still wearing the gloves that they've worn in every shop & touched all manner of surfaces.

Then there's all the PPE waste to think of, we were struggling with plastic waste before the pandemic.

Correct use of PPE needs expert TRAINING. It is very hard to learn good PPE habits, ask any nurse or doctor on the frontline. The wrong use and wearing is probably worse than not wearing any face covering and keeping a distance. Plus for those like me, who wear glasses that steam up due to inability to seal the mask to the face properly.
