t4 Fuel Economy etc
hi,
I'm becoming increasingly tempted towards the purchase of a 1999 S40 T4 AUTO advertised locally for £5000 (trade). I'd like to know ....truthfully!..what sort of mpg I can expect?. Also, I've read on-line that in the year 2000 the T4 plant was upgraded to 2.0 from 1.9, I've also read that the 1.9 suffers from turbo lag far more than a 2.0, is this true?, and is it significant? Basically, with 60,000 miles on the clock, do you think that's a fair price? Thanks in advance, David. (1972 Land Rover series 3, 2004 Harley Davidson Sportster,) |

RE: t4 Fuel Economy etc
Hi David,
I bought a late 98 V40 manual about a month ago. I paid £2900 and it had 103k on the clock with full volvo service history. I've paid out about £500 since I got it to fix a few running problems, but I can honestly say its the most fun and yet practical car i've ever had. A couple of paint blemishes and a few scuffs on the leather, but otherwise great. People think I paid twice as much. I've averaged 23 mpg over the last 1000 miles, but that has been either around town or pi**ing off merc & bmw drivers who hog the outside lane. I'm using super unleaded after having read stuff in this forum and I am blown away with the mid range performance. I did a manchester - birmingham run last weekend and got 30 mpg at an average 80 mph. I am hoping to stop making full use of my radar detector soon and drive at normal speeds, but it feels so right to watch the speedo rise and mpg drop... £5000 doesn't sound excessive, especially with it being low miles. RE: t4 Fuel Economy etc
Hi David
I've got an 01 T4 manual and get around 30MPG using Optimax. I did test drive a few T4's 1.9 and 2.0 before getting this one, and I found that the 2.0 is much smoother under acceleration, you just sit and watch the MPH fly up rather than get a kick in the back from the turbo! However the are a quick as each other. Strange title though 't4 Fuel Economy etc'. You don't buy a T4 for economy, but I promise you will have loads of fun! Steve |

RE: t4 Fuel Economy etc
Hi,
I have a 99 S40 T4 auto with 64000 on the clock, according to the info centre I am averaging 26 mpg on optimax. That's for general around town work with a small number of motorway miles. On an extended motorway run I've been able to get mid 30's to the gallon, but as everybody else has said if you get it you'll love it. |
