Default T4 power loss

I have a problem with my 99 V40 T4 losing power. On a recent journey after I'd driven about 20-30 miles the engine went lumpy and kept losing power until it stopped, and wouldn't restart.

The breakdown arrived and after several checks sprayed WD40 into the large pipe attached to the air cleaner. The car started, but the lamba warning light came on. The breakdown guy reckoned it could be the cat breaking-up and blocking the exhaust. So he recovered the car home, where it sat on the drive all day Sunday.

On Monday i take the car to my independent Volvo garage. The warning light is now off and the car is fine. So i drive around for 15 miles, but it's still fine. I leave it with the garage. They run some tests and reckon it might be the air flow meter, and reckon the cat should be fine, but they cannot replicate the problem.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with their V40? Any cat or air flow problems? Incidently my car has done 118k miles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,
Mat.

Have the fuel rail pressure checked. If its a little on the low side, your fuel pump may be on its way out. I doubt its the MAF sensor because even if that was faulty, you should be able to disconnect it and still start the car.

If it turns out that the fuel pump has indeed failed, it is possible to get direct replacement high-flow pumps which are substantially cheaper than the Volvo supplied one (mainly because it comes as a complete assembly from Volvo).

Yes, I've had exactly the same on my '99 V40 T4. Like yours it was fine the next day, but after reading similar problems on this forum, I decided the fuel pump was the probable cause and changed it rather than risk a repeat breakdown.

That was about 2 years / 30,000 miles ago and the problem hasn't come back.

Do a search for "fuel pump" on here...plenty more info I'm sure.

Colin.

cheers for the responses. I'll ask the garage about the fuel pump.

My original message was a bit brief about the breakdown guy's diagnosis. He actually offered several suggestions including, fuel starvation and cat breaking-up.

I've had the car run rough before, but that was towards the end of a run so it had time to cool down before being driven again. That time, and this recent breakdown the car has been a little low on fuel (just above red). Not sure if that's related?

rgds,
Mat.
