Default D24tic cambelt 1993

Following head gasket replacement it was decided to replace camshaft and pump belts. the parts supplier gave me a kit which was wrong because 1993 was a changeover year. early ones are tensioned by moving waterpump and using special tool to get tension(vw210). mine had a spring loaded tensioner which relies on spring tension to maintain tension. Also cam belt is 120 tooth as against 119 of earlier engine. I was originally supplied with 119 tooth belt, luckily the engine was turned over by hand before starting, after about 2 revs the engine jammed, checking the timing again revealed timing was way out. Had the engine been fired it would have smashed up. Eventually belt was checked and should have been 120 tooth. With that fitted all was ok. So be careful out there.

Default d24 belts

Glad to hear that there is an explanation! Still leaves me wondering exactly what was changed and when. 93 cars had the spring tensioner and the 119 belt. Presumably the head, bottom end valves and cam would be the same on all cars - would it have been the sprockets that were different? Or, which parts on post 93 cars are not interchangeable?

hello jor
i have got the sevice bulitin which says a spring loaded belt tensioner on cars post 1993 .before that year the water pump had slotted holes to apply the tension . my freind of mine was also supplied with a 119 teeth belt for his 1995 volvo . which did not fit . .my main concern now is obtaining the belt tension gauge. for when i have the belts pulleys and water pump replaced by my mechanic. car has done 155000 miles . my freinds water pump failed at 200000 miles . .

Well I am sure you are relieved to know for definite that the belt is correct James. The TSB doesn't by any chance say what parts were altered to necessitate the change of belt? Do you think your tensioner may not be working correctly?

hi jor
the info on service bulliten . quote= a spring loaded belt tensioner which ensures correct timeing belt tension and elimates the tensioning function of the coolant pump. a longer timing belt designed for the spring loaded belt tensioner . my freind and myself found the tensioner needed ajusting on both cars both made by litens of canada . his came from g.s.f. mine from main dealer . his was cheaper

My 760 TD cam belt is being replaced next Tuesday. I understand from this thread that mine if pre 93 where tenson is via waterpump and garage doing work have also confirmed this

Reading this thread, I have had the garage doing mine confirm they have Volvo tool 5197 but now wonder if they need VW210 instead of or as well as? Cheers
