Replacing tyre on V50 2.0D Sport
Hi
I am getting close to having to replace tyres on my V50. They are low profile and an unusual size (apparently). Replacement cost for each tyre is around £250 which has been verified by 2 tyre maintenance outlets Is it possible to replace all tyres with a normal (non low profile) tyre to save costs in the long run ? Any thoughts on options here ? Thanks |

I assume that by low 'profile' you mean you have 18" wheels. The 'profile' is the ratio between the width if the tyre to the height of the side wall, so, for example 225/35 means the tyre is 225mm wide and the side wall will be 35% of that, so about 79mm. The combination of profile and wheel size dictate the circumference of the tyre.
So - if you go for a higher profile ratio without putting on a narrower tyre (which may not fit the wheel width) or new smaller, 17" wheels, you will mess up your gearing, speedo readings and may get rubbing. Also if you go away from the recommended sizes (you will find these on the tyre pressure sticker on the door jam), you should declare it to your insurance as a modification. V50 Volvo 18" wheels run a less common tyre size, so choice is limited, therefore they can charge more. What makes of tyre are they quoting for? Tyres come in Premium, mid range and budget brands. Assuming you are being quoted for a premium brand, to reduce cost get a quote for a mid range tyre, I would stay away from budget tyres even if available. Makes like Nexen and Hankook, that you perhaps haven't heard of, so may have been put off, are both fine. When you know the available makes for the size you need, look at the tyre reviews on the Auto Express web site or ask on here for opinions on cheaper tyre options. I run 225/45/18.Loads more choice and loads cheaper,Plus my GPS says the speedo is more accurate too! Prices start at around £50 each.I phoned the insurance to check before i got them, told me as long as i wasnt changing from the standard wheel they didnt care.

Hi Wooders
What pressures are you using in your 225/45/18s and which insurance company are you with? Tony
