Blue, carb air filters
Hi re' the blue air filters on twin SU carb setups,I recall seeing an article about converting to accept less expensive filter cartridges. Does any body remember this and have any links to the article?

I've fitted a 140 airbox with the inlet trunking cut off flush with the cover. Works well, as in very cold damp weather, the cover can be turned round to draw warmer air from over the exhaust manifold.

Please email any questions. Will ship to USA only.
Any way by the time I paid shipping and duty + IVA/VAT it would more than double price.

The one piece 140 airbox with nozzle is quietter and more efficient than a pair of blue filters. The blue ones look sporty and make "nice" noises and that's it. The airbox has 3(?) types of intake, a basic short nozzle that is fine, a longer one with a section with convolutions in it and the full house system with warm air valve. They are all more efficient than the blue filters, in part because they help to get cooler air into the carbs. The blue ones, and any others of that type, just inhale whatever happens to be passing by. Where you are the under bonnet temps can be pretty high and being over the exhaust manifold may even be taking in air at two different temps depending whether you are moving or not. High engine fan revs will mix up the air a lot. The nozzles can take air in from the front corner where it is a bit cooler. Some front panels have a hole for the nozzle so the intake is from the outboard side of the rad, a good thing.
I'm thinking that you might still have the big airbox on the shelf? Filter inserts for them are about £16-18, cheaper from factors. Cross ref GKN Masterparts MAF 647. |
