Thanks, I had the software update done in March by Volvo dealer. Ad yes, it seems the dealer experience differs from place to place. This dealer I am talking about, mind you, is in Oxford, land of posh and filthy rich, so maybe they're used with new cars only.

Hi all.

Reading with interest as my v8 discovery 2 is in need of replacement.

I have my eye on a very well specced T6 executive with an lpg conversion. I am not bothered about mpg, as the discovery enjoys time at the pumps. What does concern me is the gearbox. The xc90 I am looking for at is an 06, fsh with 96k miles. I take it it's still got the dodgy 'box?

So, is this just the only issue with the t6 (and therefore seen as the end of the world) or is it genuinely common enough for me to 'expect' it to go?

I does look like a beautiful example and the mpg doesn't scare me. I am also acutely aware of the fact that most people are only moved to write on forums when they suffer problems.

What to do?

You have got to be MAD to buy a T6 after reading about the transmission failures which have already costed Volvo US a pretty hefty class action lawsuit settlement. http://www.chimicles.com/volvo-xc90-...ion-litigation
Unless you get it with £4k deposit for when (not if) the trany dies, I wouldn't bother. Yes, we're here because we had failures, and your well specced T6 may not suffer from them (a well rehearsed Volvo service/dealer line by the way which basically means: fcuk those who picked the short straw! instead of showing some responsibility) but this design flaw will add unnecessary worry to a long journey abroad with the family. Most European beaches don't sell crappy GM transmissions you know? Consider yourself warned, sir! (I wish every day I posted this question and someone taught me out of it before buying my T6).

Off to Heathrow now to get a flight to Europe for a holiday as my T6 is only good for short shopping trips and school runs.

I'm left with high (circa 150k miles) d5 models.

A better buy you think?

I bought a low mileage 04 T6 in April knowing full well the gearbox is made from chocolate. But mine had just had a full inspection and service by MRG and it's gearbox reconditioned about 9k before I bought it. So I'm taking a calculated risk that it will last another 70k miles before it needs any other work. The saving against a similar D5 is about 2-3k which would be the cost of another gearbox refurb.

It' yours choice to make. If you factor in the cost of a refurb or replacement when you buy it you'll be fine.

I am glad that works for you. Most used cars out there will never need a transmission rebuild EVER, yet you're confident to pull another 70k out of a reconditioned one. But I agree with what you said last; if you factor in the cost of transmission rebuild, then yea you can buy the T6. Still to my mind this ia crazy; why the headaches when you have so many other options of reliable SUVs out there?

Just to bring it back from the dead.

What mileage did you sell or write off your T6 at?

Thanks, Tony.

Buy one of those at your peril. A gearbox can go on any car but with a T6 you know it will go and it is just a question of when.

assuming that the gearbox does go pop, is there a better solution than fitting another AW 4 speed?

ie, could the newer box without issues be fitted?
