Tyres again
I have an XC70 D5 AWD
just discovered that a front tyre has a small egg shaped bulge so must be changed. Quandry is do I put the rear tyres on the front and buy 1 new tyre and put it on the back with the good front one, or do I buy two front tyres. Will the AWD be upset by having tyres with different tread depths ? The car runs on Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Seasons which I will buy again |

All post 2003MY Volvo AWD models are Haldex based and therefore have no problems whatsoever with un-matched tyres - despite what many tyre outlets will tell you when trying to get you to buy a set of 4.
However, from the point of view of safer handling and predictability, you should try to match tyres across each axle and put your best set to the rear. This is documented in your owners manual.

Biting the bullet
The tyres have done 33,000, on the front, which is a massive improvement on my previous Gen 3 V70 which only did about 14,000 miles on the front so I'm biting the bullet and getting 2 new Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Seasons. I'm taking our caravan to the Northern Spanish Pyrenees soon and dont want to be thinking about tyres
Black Circles want £126, Asda Tyres want £116, I'm going to my local depot who I've used for many years who will do them for £120. Why do you never feel better off buying tyres ? |

On my 2012 XC70 D5 I've just replaced the front pair of Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season tyres with the same again. I'd already done the same at the back last year. On other cars that I've owned I hated Pirelli tyres and avoided them like the plague but the XC70 came with them and I found them long lasting, quiet, grippy and without any handling vices, so I've stuck with them. I paid £120 a piece to have them fitted at 5 minutes notice after a catastrophic puncture, luckily at slow speed near my home. I could have bought them cheaper but it would have entailed a wait.
