Default Front Seats

While I am in front of my iPad venting my spleen about my transmission ( see other thread) I could mention my drivers seat.

Now the stiching on the outside bolster has come adrift and is showing an unseemly amount of foam seating material.

I took the seat out and headed to the local upholsterer to do a job and sort it out.

He rang me when he had it a part to say "can't fix it mate, it has an airbag in the seat". It would have to be done a seat fixer fella to an appropriate standard or something. It would need to comply with the original manufacture. If something was to go wrong he could be held accountable. Fair enough I though.

So now I have a seat that cannot be fixed. Now in New South Wales cars over five years old have to have a registration check each year. A seat like mine would fail and I probably will not be able to get a new one.

The only option I have is to put a seat cover over it which seems like a terrible thing to do to leather seats. But it would get me out of trouble. Just gotta make sure I have air bag compliant seat covers.

You can try getting a used one from the breakers.. compatibility wise is not certain, depends on your year, usually 04-09 would be similar, 01-03 also but not sure about the SRS software. This is what I did to my seat base https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOhUYIG6Qv4

I am afraid that going to breakers (or wreckers as we used to know them but now auto recyclers) may not be of much use to me.

The older Volvos are not too common around here. I am the only V70 and there are a couple XC70's lurking around too.

I really am between a rock and hard place with this.

Does the same thing occur in Britain with your MOT?
