New shock absorbers required?
Hi all,
I've had my S80 with the Active 4C set up for a few months now, and it has just clocked 140k miles. I think it is on the original shocks. Recently the ride has got very "crashy" on rough roads, particularly at the rear, with poor ability to absorb even minor bumps in the road. This is combined with a lot of "pock-pock" noise, although no actual knocking. I'm guessing it could be either shock absorbers or bushes, and as the 4C shocks are expensive I'd like to rule these out if possible. So, are there any specific symptoms / handling characteristics I can test for to rule out (or in) failure of the shocks, as opposed to other components? I'm hoping it will be something less expensive which needs replacing! Thanks in advance. Simon |

Hey Simon. I've been trying to find some time to compose a reply to your post. The passenger shock failed on our S80 at 118k mark. Symptoms included not soaking up minor holes in the road, going over grates etc. Also, I had a metallic squeaking noise every time I traversed said features in roads. The senior at the local volvo dealer took it out for a spin and noticed the noises it was making from that area. Got into the tech bay and he plugged it in to VIDA. Wasn't showing any communication errors. He then put it up on the ramps and took the front wheel off to inspect the shock. The strut was covered in oil. He lowered it back to the floor again, and put the chassis in Advanced mode. Normally in this mode, doing an old-fashioned bounce test shouldn't make the car move. There was a lot of play in the passenger side though. Cycling through all the modes on the chassis, the same play was seen. The stealer advised it was a £570 replacement part plus labour @ £112. I told them i'd source it from elsewhere, thinking that I could get the aftermarket Monroe set for it. However, they're still not available retail (partnumber C2510 if you're interested). I called Volvo Swansea for a quote, and they did it for £420 for the shock. Took it back to the local dealer with the new shock, and it was changed in the morning. Graham brought the old one out to show me it and there was no oil in it at all, the metal rod just plummetted to the bottom when he tipped it up. Hope this helps somewhat. I'm gonna hold off as long as possible to replace the rest of them, in the hope that Monroe release them to the aftermarket. Refusing to pay £2504 to replace something that only cost the previous owner £1100 to have fitted at the factory

If I may add my twopence to this thread... I also have doubts about the ones in my car as I have a feeling that car recently started behaving rather badly on a rough surfaces.
I humbly believe that subject of shock absorbers is sort-of swept under the carpet in the UK (in the same way as winter tyres are) - which has its positive aspects (it's cheaper to run the car) but also negative ones (other elements and car behaviour in general can be severely affected if shock absorbers are not good anymore). I believe they are usually warranted by manufacturers for 50-80km (30-50k miles) - after which period their efficiency should be regularly tested. As far as I can tell they are not part of MOT test in the UK in strict meaning, unless they are broken, leaking etc. What surprises me the most is fact that their efficiency is not subject of these tests. I stand corrected if this is not the case. Please have a look here: http://autodiagnostyka.hg.pl/amort.htm Although in Polish you will undoubtedly guess the gist of it. And yes, if your shock absorbers are underperforming (below 40% efficiency) that's MOT fail. As simple as that. I am also sure that this is also compulsory test in other parts of Europe as well. Roads' quality in the UK is of much better quality, no doubt, so this can transpire onto the longer lifespan of these elements. Still, this is not something that should be easily ignored in my view (as with tyres, brakes etc. - so everything related to safety). In either case my car is going to be serviced in month's time - I will ask for these to be looked at, with more emphasis than just pressing the corner and counting how many times it bounces... |

At 140k miles the shocks are pretty tired. It's the shocks that give that harsh ride over street imperfections because they can't any long quickly compress to absorb the bumps, instead they became more stiff. Note that they can still properly absorb the bouncing in the suspension. In my area the aftermarket parts store has the rear ones in Monroe at about £70 each for my S60.
Coil springs also lack elasticity at such mileage but they will affect less the comfort. The clunking noise are from worn out suspension bushings and top coil spring bearings, not a major issue on an old car unless it causes uneven tire wear or alignment issues. |

As an aside, just make sure that if you are replacing the struts that you also spend the extra $'s to replace the mounts. No sense getting the alignment done only to have to then rip the struts back out later doing the alignment a second time because the bearings/mounts have now failed.

Monroe
Hi,
Just to let you know that if your replacement shocks from Monroe are the C2510 (Front) and C1513 (rear), you can find them on ebay for about £370 a pair. I changed mines last month on my XC70 2008. Hope this helps. Luca |

If you have a P3 V70, the C2510 is definitely the right one. As per the XC70 instead, I am not sure but don't see why they should be different considering are exactly the same as in the V70. Hope my answer was useful Mark. Cheers, Luca |
