Fitting flying saucer tie bar/control arm bushes
So while the car was on the ramp ( having the prop centre bearing replaced, again ) and we had a spare hour I decided to start fitting these to try and get of this annoying clicking noise from the front. The old bushes did look a bit tired but there was no major visible signs of movement apart from a few small dark areas under the washer. So socket and long breaker bar soon dispatched the front bolt duly followed by the rear bolt, removed the stabiliser bar for better access, levered the tie bar down and it came out quite easily.
The rear bush looked in good condition but the one on the other side looks to be twisted so they will be replaced. So back to the flying saucer bushes which to put it politely were goosed so chiselled what was left of them out, cleaned off the rust and polished it up with a wire brush in an electric drill. So cleaned up the bar and the bolts and washers and refitted the bar with new bushes. Only had time to do one side but will be ordering new rear bushes before I revisit it to finish the job off. On driving away noticed the steering wheel a touch out but I will sort that once the job is completed. It even seems that the clicking noise has gone but a good test drive will confirm that. Quick question, rear bushes, are they 1329644 ?? And are the large front washers available separately ?? Last edited by besidetheseaside; May 20th, 2019 at 22:13. |

Those bushes are TARFU Don!
I think the front washers are available separatly but no reason you can't use the one that came with the new bushes as well as the new bolt. With the steering, the other side will push it further out. Once you've done it all, before taking it for wheel alignment or doing it yourelf if you have tracking gauges, make sure that when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position (as you would expect to see the steering wheel, not necessarily what gives you straight ahead progress), it's exactly 1 3/4 turns to either full lock. This will ensure the rack is central to the steering wheel, the rest can be done on the track rod ends to realign the front wheels. Failure to get this right can result in the PAS fluid overheating and bubbling out of the reservoir. After doing my spaceships, the wheels were toeing out so badly, it was visible and if viewed from above as clock hands would have read "5 to 1".

I only got the bushes off Mark, no bolts of washers, original bolts are fine to be honest, just be nice to put some shiny washers on.

The old bolts are 20+ years old so have some level of fatigue, they have been stretched, they're a bit corroded, they're the only thing holding that control arm where it should be - you see where i'm going on this? I have (somewhere, can't remember where just now) seen a recommendation the bolts are renewed each time, single use only in other words. Granted the chances of a used bolt failing are small but there is a reason the kits come with a new bolt.

Right bolts and washers on way, rear bushes may as well be fitted at the same time, are they 1329644 equivalent ??

Not sure on the rear/inner bush to be honest Don, normally they have a relatively easy life so unless either of yours are absolutely hanging out, probably not much to be gained by changing them.
However a quick bit of research shows 1329644 does not exist! That said, 1329655 does exist and is the correct bush for the inner end of the control arm - typo perhaps? For the cost, if you have a press then go for it, it won't hurt, it will probably make it nicer to drive but only in a small way unless the old ones are well and truly shot. Wise choice on the new bolts too! EDIT - here's a choice of ebay inner bushes : https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_o...29655&_sacat=0 I can see where you got the 44 ending now, part of a Meyle part number, not a Volvo one!

They don't come with bolts or washers so I would reckon you could get away with using existing bolts. They may have thread lock on if I remember rightly though I would deffo use new front washers and clean up the rear ones as best as you can or the new bushes will wear out

Thanks Dave, the rear bush on the arm we took off appeared to be fine but the other side looks to be twisted in the housing so it might be an idea to replace it/them. I have access to a bush press/pull kit but will make sure he still has it before I start.
