Default Towing outfit thread?

Don't know what other members think but would a sticky thread on towing outfits be of any use?

Members could post details of their tow car and trailer/caravan with weights etc and more importantly a brief report on how the outfit performs and any issues they've experienced.

It may be of help to other members thinking of acquiring a caravan/trailer.

I know there are other websites out there that will give you details on max towing weights and theoretical outfit performance for your chosen car/caravan/trailer etc but there's nowt quite like first hand experience to draw on.

What does everyone else think?

I would offer to go first but seeing as I only towed my shed of a 'van about 8 miles from its previous owner I can't say much at the moment.

We occasionally tow our caravan with our 1968 Amazon estate but as our caravan is a 1967 Cheltenham we can't help much .

Hi Sykes,
I have just stop (last year) towing with my 850 SE 2.0ltr (LPG) Auto 1994 (207K). I now use a 1999 Grand Cherokee. The main reason for upgrade to 4x4 was I use CL sites mainly and the wet weather caused concern (but never stuck) with the front wheel 850. I still use the 850 as my daily car and still use to tow sometimes.

The Maximum towing is 1600Kg but the kerbweight is around 1475Kg. I have a 1400kg caravan 2006 Elddis Sunseeker 484. The Volvo was at 95%-96% and could tow the van without issue but suffered due to the 95% when lorrys went passed, as long as I keep to 55 and the awning in the car this was not an issue. The outfit could accelerate up at 15% hill without difficult so there is plently of power there.

To answer your question of safe MPTLM if new to caravanning do not go above the 85% which would mean 1250kg to be your safe MPTLM

Hope this helps and happy caravanning

Hi thanks DC850, the car we have is a 2.5. We have towed an old abbey "cambridge" i think it was and our van now is an adria optima. We were thinking of getting a sterling eccles topaz mptlm 1366 which comes in at 92.4% do you think this would be a problem. Otherwise looks like being a sprite sportstyle which comes in at 78.9% but is a little smaller in length and mptlm of 1167. Both these vans are two berth end washroom types. Just the sprite is bit more basic. Only worried cos the other two vans we had were quite old and inexpensive but the ones we looking at are nearer £10,000 mark so want to be safe
