Default 16 T turbo

Hi
I have a 1996 850R Manual
It has had an engine rebuild, Ive been looking through the receipts etc and It says It has a later style 16T turbo
What does this mean, Is it to do with the flange being different?
I presume its better , but what is better about it?

Kind Regards
Lea

Yep, it should have a 16T if its a manual car - the autos retained the slightly smaller 15G of the T5-R engine.

The 16T is able to carry more ultimate CFM airflow and thus produce more ultimate power, but has slightly more lag than a 15G as it takes slightly longer to spin up - its bigger so has more inertia to overcome. It isn't a huge improvement over a 15G but is a good useful turbo to have.

BTW The 'T' and 'G' refer to the turbine impellor design - the G has a twin vane allowing good response at low-mid rpm, whereas the T has a simple single vane which is more efficient at mid-high rpm.

Default 16t or later style 16t

Thanks rollingthunder
Thanks for the info, its very helpful
I know the 850r came with 16T turbo, what I was getting at, is there a 16T and a later style 16T?
Because in the info on the car i think its indicating that the turbo is a later style of the 16T.
Is this possible, or is it just one type of 16T
Cheers
Kind regards
Lea

Ah right, sorry, I should read more carefully

Yes, I think there are various types of flange - while any 16T will bolt up to any pre-ME7 manifold (I think, but not 100% sure), the outlet flange can be in various configurations - flat, conical, angled, etc which suits the downpipe fitted. Of course if you have a custom downpipe made up its academic what is fitted, as the pipe will be made for that variation of flange.

Is there any benefit to the various configurations? I'm sure there is but for all but the most highly modified engines I doubt it'd be noticable - and even then I reckon professionally porting the turbo and manifold would easily beat that advantage (and is well worth doing anyway, even to a std engine - it eases gasflow, reduces temperatures, and makes the turbo more responsive).
