Manual says 5-10 minutes...not sure why the variation.

The parking brake is indeed electric but it's separate from autohold and only work on the rear wheels. Autohold uses the brake servo pressure and works on all four. Two separate systems for safety.
Read my post again. It is clear and correct in the most part but you may be correct in that it uses the same system as hill hold assist, but without the 2 second timer release. Neither the hanbrake nor the other system make any significant noise on mine apart from the pads releasing.

Just checked the manual for my car and it says ~5 mins.

The issue is when pulling away from a temporary stop so I’m not sure if this is auto hold or hill start.

Spoke to the dealer today and it seems they do think there is an issue after testing other XC60s in the dealership and not replicating the same noise. They have therefore raised it with Volvo abd we’ll have to see what happens.

I disagree with the poster who said that it’s something that happens on all ‘auto hold’. I’ve had 2 VW CCs, both with auto hold, neither of which made this noise when pulling away with auto hold. I know they are different manufacturers but I’d have thought the principle of auto hold is the same. The Service Manager at the dealership said he has a v90 which doesn’t make this noise.

More waiting while they try and sort it out. Think the car has spent almost as much time at the dealership as in my position since I bought. Starting to get a little disheartened and yearning for my CC back.

If you aren't on an uphill start when it happens it is the auto handbrake feature. This can be disabled with the little button immediately behind and part of the parking brake switch. There is a tiny green light that shows when it is switched on. Switch it off, by pressing it briefly for the light to extinguish and all your troubles 'should' go away.*

*This information is worth exactly what you paid for it.

The issue is I like the auto hold function and don’t want to switch it off. In addition I don’t think I should pay £40k for a car and to then have to switch off a function to stop an annoying noise that should not be happening. Just my opinion.

Likewise, no annoying noise just the very slight noise you would expect from the release of the brakes.

I have this feature on both of our cars and I can confirm neither makes a noise when disengaged
