An early D3 sounds like the best option, if one can be found in good condition and at the right price.

This has the 2-litre 5-cylinder diesel producing 161 bhp.

My son has this engine in his Front Wheel Drive 2011 XC70 Geartronic, and he says that it's the best car that he has ever owned.

I have a twin turbo 215 bhp D5 and it is a powerful beast. And if it isn't powerful enough the Polestar option pushes it up to 230 bhp which is certainly powerful enough for me.
Yes, hence why I said “the most powerful engines”. Its fairly obvious a 215bhp engine has more power than a 205bhp. I just mean these are the most powerful of the D5’s, but the OP would need to look at newer models if he/she wanted these variants.

I would advise against the D5 Euro4 185bhp with the swirl flap design. I think this ran from around 2005-2010 but happy to be corrected.

Well I would probably still take the D5 over the others, but ideally the earlier D5 163bhp.

I don’t disagree the E3 163 is the pick of the bunch for reliability but if I’ve read the OP correctly we’re talking of P3 V70 (post 2007 model year).

Unless you can get a D4 badged V70 with the Volvo 4-cylinder diesel (introduced for 2015 MY) then stick to the Volvo 5-cylinder engines.

The autobox on the 2.0D's is a Ford unit as well and more likely to give trouble than the AW units bolted to the Volvo engines.
Automatic transmission wasn't available on the V70 2.0 (PSA) they were manual only. A little unrelated snippet, the 2.0d psa is fitted with a Triple CAT DPF, NOT an additive tank. It was the only Volvo in the range fitted with the 2.0D that used this type of regeneration process (same as the D5/2.4D,) everything else (V50/C30 etc) used an additive system.

A 2010 car may be possible with the D5204T2 engine labelled D3. This is a Euro5 2.0 5 cylinder 163PS. Same sort of output numbers as the Euro3 D5 to around 2005/6.
