Default Had the strangest noise the other day

So driving back through town, and stop on a small incline.

Pull away from the lights, and it sounds like roadworks going on somewhere, like concrete being cut.
As I accelerate, it gets louder. Oh crap, thats me making that noise. People are looking. It sounds like a pick-axe being dragged under my car. Has someone tried to nick my cat whilst i was parked up?

Pull over, engine off and visual inspection. All wheels inflated, exhaust in one piece, suspension working as intended.

Engine back on, drive the rest of the way to my folks, then 75 miles on the m25. All fine, no dash messages.

Have a OBD reader coming from amazon for the wife's car, so will chuck it on this one as well, but any ideas?

My current thinking is something to do with the start/stop, as even though i had done the 75 miles to get there, I did wait in the car for an hour with the radio on - and like most things that have gone wrong with it, is a battery issue.

Or you snagged some debris from the road that dragged for a while and it fell off when you pulled over.

Favourite is you had a stone caught behind the disc and infront of the shield.

I did think it was a stone jam, but ruled that out as it started suddenly after about 15 mins of driving.

No debris, I pulled over in a bus stop and it would've been obvious if there was something that big.

Im with SnineT with the stone caught in the brake guard, had it once where like yourself i was already on the move, parked up shunted back and forth a few feet and noise stopped.

I was towing the caravan at the time, thought it at become detached.

I agree - likely to be a stone caught in the brake guard. Has happened to me a couple of times where it started whilst on the move.

I had similar symptoms, it turned out to be a stuck starter motor
replaced under warranty

I have a video of the noise somewhere.

One way to check is to if you can without taking it all apart is to feel if there are grooves in the rear of the disc and the shield should show some marks as well, if you did have a stone it will have left it's mark.

Also the starter idea isn't a bad shout either as it might have been stuck in an engaged position although I think you would've fully damaged it and it would no longer work but still worth checking anyway, if it does it again and you can hear it stationary pop the hood and listen for where it's coming from, generally the starter is on the back of the engine near the gearbox but some are on the front but same general area.

Had this happen on quite a number of occasions on V40 D4 (320mm discs). The noise when it happens is quite loud and worrying until you realise it's just a stone that got between the backplate and disc. Just changed the front discs a few weeks ago and found gouges on the back face of the LHS disc left from the most recent event where noise was on that side. Strange that I never had this problem on my old S60 (covered 260,000 miles) or current XC60.

You don’t say what model and variant. If it’s a hybrid, read the sticky post about ERAD issues.
