But the discovery was, after parking as above, and removing key from ignition, I can still press preset '1' and the mirrors will go back to normal, ready for my subsequent departure at some later time. Key needn't be on, or even in ignition lock, providing I have not yet closed the drivers door...
I enjoyed having the seat memory on my XC70 although my CLK does one better, when you shut the car down on the button or turn the key to position 0 (depending on if you're using the key or going keyless) the seat slides back and the steering wheel back and up out of the way automatically so you don't have to take up setting 3 as a get out setting. Also has memory on the passenger seat, handy that.

Shame I'm the only one who drives it though, so a lot of that is redundant!! Also a minor ergonomic win from Mercedes putting the buttons on the door instead of on the seat, I much prefer that to the buttons being on the seat.

Another one people may not be aware of in Volvo land is that all the audio sources have separate volume controls, so when you adjust the volume on FM, it doesn't automatically adjust the volume on CD or Aux, USB or BT if fitted; they are all independent. Or at least, they have been on my XC70 and my V50.

Default Just shows.....

How many people don't read the handbooks of their cars cover to cover or even at all

with the radio switched off hold the volume knob in for a few seconds on your radio and it will go into "Advanced User Mode" turn the 1-20 Disc button to select a function (page 161 of my V70 handbook) there's about 13 different functions to be set up

Thankyou for this really useful idea Somewhat embarrassed also that after nearly 5 years of having cars with memory drivers seat, I'd never thought to do this I'm the only driver of my car so I've set position 2 to dip the driver's side mirror and 3 for the passenger side mirror, that way I can also keep an eye on what's coming up from behind while I'm reversing, whichever side the kerb is. In conjunction with my usual check out of the driver's door, 3 will also be good for judging alignment & centreing within supermarket parking spaces.

Happy to report a discovery yesterday that with the LED DRL's, the auto headlights setting also automatically stops you leaving the main beams on by mistake when you flash someone, if the headlights aren't on. On the old car where the headlights were also the DRL's, I left them set to on all the time instead of switching from 0, because there seemed no point (I didn't know about the reduced power consumption at the time). By daylight, I just had to be careful not to blind people I was trying to be polite to!

Unfortunately not on all models, well, at least not on my C70, so I've set memory 3 to drop the near side mirror.

I still find it annoying that turning off the ignition loses various settings. I can understand losing the auto wipers (blades could be frozen to the screen), but not the lecky mirrors. On every other car I've had the mirror last moved stays selected.

Have you told the seat to memorise the mirror setting you have made? If you didn't memorise it then it will default to factory (or last memorised) position each time you switch the ignition off.

Ref dipping a mirror for parking and getting them back to normal again, I take it we all know that you don't have to hold down the button, just a momentary touch is needed.

The mirror starts rotating back to target position as soon as you touch the button, even if you have already switched off engine & removed the key, on completion of parking.

Only condition seems to be you need to let it finish twitching before closing the driver's door, usually plenty of time. If you're too quick though, and shut the door too soon, the mirror seems to stay in whatever 'in-between' position it had reached, next time you drive off. That is probably because it gets stored for the key when you lock the car. Solved of course by using the usual preset, but can be annoying if you don't notice.

Above is true for my 2008 S60, at least.

With Apols for consecutive posts, I began to doubt what I just said, about closing a door causing the mirrors to stop moving.

So I just nipped out and tried it. Mirror completed its manoeuvres, even after I'd closed the door. I was wrong.

Then I tried it again, this time it stopped as I'd predicted, when I shut the door. So maybe I was right after all, but only with an '-ish' and a 'sometimes'.

Third and subsequent attempts were as the first, the mirrors kept moving. Anybody care to reflect on this behaviour and suggest any explanations?

Sorry, I didn't mean it lost the memory, but that the mirror select button doesn't stay active after you've switched the ignition off, so the next time you come to use the car and move the mirror, you have to press the L or R button. On other cars I've had the last one selected remains ready to use.

Is the mirror memory setting not in the Menu?? I'm sure it's in there under car settings somewhere to sync the mirror drop with the seat setting.

I found out that if you rub the rear spoiler with a foam wax applicator you can generate about 100kV electrostatic field. I'm sure this is a design feature, and has some sort of useful application.
