Generally bikes are less used in the winter, are garaged and have lower mileage.

My newest is 17years old, and if it wasn't for an iffy quality factory paint job, it is in very good overall condition.

Nothing wrong with old stuff so long as its looked after and motorcyclists tend to be rather more clued up than car drivers with regards to maintenance and DIY skills.

Older 600s like the Thundercat era are a great choice but, my pick would be the ZX6R/636 A1P or CBR600F. Thundercat is rather dated against those and slower but if you can live with that then a clean one is worth a look.

To be honest you need to get to some large bike stores and have a sit on a few to work out a short list, then get some test rides (if you can). A lot of great bikes have been mentioned which doesn't make it easier but, gives you an idea of the things to start looking at.

Personally I'd avoid any bike regardless of age, if it doesn't have service history as maintenance is critical and any worthwhile owner will keep a stamped booked and/or receipts aside to track and prove whats been done. These will usually have had a better life.

I rode a Honda Deauville NT650 as my daily work horse and weekend fun bike for 7 yrs and found it to be a superb bit of kit for the job it was designed to do.

It did however start to struggle with a pillion and luggage weight on both the braking and power side. Not had any other experience in the 600`s class but suspect most would be the same when the additional weight is added.

I`m now on my 3rd year with my trusty old Blackbird CBR1100, another superb bike from Honda however it would not be a sensible step up for a 125 rider due to it`s 240KG + weight and the masses of power which would not be very forgiving in unexperienced hands. Plus of course the increased insurance premiums if you have not amassed some no claims bonus over the years.

I loved the Thundercat when I was riding. A distant memory for me these days and not been on a bike now for over 10 years. Kids made me stop.

Well my day has been 💩

Had my mod 1 test today and put my dam foot down on the figure of 8....... the one bloody manoeuvre I would've bet my life on to pass!!!!

Was a bag of nerves- why???- and just didn't relax. I'm totall gutted as the slalom and figure of 8 were the manoeuvres I never messed up on- even on cbt!

Didn't help that it was raining/ bike wouldn't start as the stand was slightly down- don't know how I managed to &@*% that up- and o got lost trying to find the damn test centre so I was totally stressed to start with.

Rebooked for next week.........
