Default Turning off headlamps- XC90

Hi all.
I picked up my XC90 today and, after a little mishap, I have to say that I'm very pleased.
Not as refined as my V70 was, but refined enough and will pull the caravan a treat.

One thing I didn't notice on the test drive is that it has the stereotypical Volvo headlights on all the time.
I'd like to turn this off. Is this something that can be done with Vida?
If so, is there anyone on Merseyside can do this?.....( for a few beer tokens!).

But why turn them off? My C70 (OK, it's older) has the facility in the headlight switch to enable headlights to be on all the time the engine is running; and I have set it to that so, at least, people can't say that they didn't see me.

I suspect that it might not be possible on newer cars as legislation required daylight running lights as compulsory?

If it is the 'new' XC90 then it's not the headlights but the DRLs. Unlike the legacy Volvos which use 'headlights', they are low energy and, of course, don't affect the life of the headlight itself. I'd keep them as is.

If you manage to turn off what is a proven safety aid and manage to crash the vehicle then I would forsee a long and protracted conversation with your insurance company.

It's 2003, so old-school headlights. Personally, I'd leave them on: there are enough stupid drivers on the road who seem incapable of spotting 2 tonnes of vehicle heading their way. Anyway, VIDA offers the option to turn DRLs if required.

I have had my local specialist turn off the lights on my last two, a V70 and an XC60.

I don't need lights to see where I am going during the day and object to burning up fuel and bulbs unnecessarily. Last headlight bulb was £58!

As there was no legal requirement to have the lights on for your age of vehicle then it is your right to turn them off.

Never had a front end collision in 35 years driving but been rear-ended twice. Maybe rear DRL's would have been a better option?

Had the headlights been left enabled, you would have had the advantage of red lights illuminated on the rear i.e. rear DRL's

It is always useful to think about the others on the road and surrounds as well as what is happening within the bubble of your own car.

Having the front lights on is nothing to do with you being able to see out of the car, it is about others - especially children, cyclists and pedestrians to see you.

Having rear lights on is to help others see your back end, had you had them on as Volvo have done for many years then perhaps you wouldn't have the accidents.

Sorry, is this for real?!

Trying to measure how much fuel the car uses for having the lights on are so small you can not really measure it.

You can probably save more if switching off the radio, climate control and the various safety devices as well.....
