Having a man with a red flag back and front would also have saved me from accidents, but maybe the people rear ending me would not have seen him either.
Take responsibility for your own actions. I'm sick of the constant nannying that reduces personal responsibility ("but I had my DRL's on, how could he possibly run in to me?"). I'm fairly sure my headlights consume more power than the radio, and as I mentioned earlier at £58 a bulb, I'd rather not waste them during the day. Please let me know how you power lights at no cost, if you added up all the power consumed by the millions of unnecessary lights on in vehicles, I'm sure the tree huggers would be interested.

A 55watt headlight bulb is equivalent to 0.074 bhp, or less than 1/25th of 1% of the D4 engine's output.
but every little helps

as suggested, switching off all the gizmos in use within the car will make a lot more of a difference than switching off headlights - plus the safety of having headlights/drls illuminated is indisputable.

Make sure you and all your passengers empty their bowels and bladders before setting off, as all that extra weight will impact on fuel economy

I had mine turned off, switch says off, side, head and that's what I now have.
I can of course leave them on but it is my decision under my control. I voted for brexit as well, and will vote for welsh independence if given the chance. Paul. |

I get the feeling that many on here would love to live in a state where 'those that know better' control every aspect of their lives 'because we say its safer'.

It all comes down to each person's risk / benefit analysis (or common sense as we used to know it ). For example, when I bought my house it was already fitted with a burglar alarm & because of that my insurance is a tiny bit cheaper as the presence of a box on the well with a flashing LED is going to act as a deterrent. Plus, if someone does break in, they are less likely to hang around with sirens blaring.
No-one forces me to set the alarm when I leave for work in the morning, but in the event that someone breaks in & trashes my stuff, I'll kick myself for not doing it, & potentially my policy may not pay out in full. There is the small risk that the alarm might go off in error & annoy my neighbours, but that's unlikely to happen. As my neighbours also have an alarm, so it's equally possible that I'd get annoyed if theirs went off in error. DRL's are much the same in my opinion. My view is that the extra fuel consumption & maybe the need to replace a bulb earlier is a small price that I'm happy to pay if it means I'm perhaps just slightly less likely to end up as a red smudge underneath an HGV. |

Let's look at it realistically.
When all is said and done, it's down to personal preferences. Wouldn't life be boring if we all thought the same way or did the same things?

Have had it done yet?
My 2 previous Volvos had the headlights off if I wanted them off. I managed to avoid running anyone over as well.
